I am now a proud member of the 'I've been to Burgie Club' and I can recommend it to anyone. Off we set before sparrow's fart o'clock last Thursday, myself, OH, Mini-Joss (9 months), the M-I-L (Mother in law) plus Echo to do the CCI* & Boris to do an Arena Event & BE100. At mid-day we drew in to the very welcome sight of Supergroom/Nanny/Media Manager Figjam waiting for us at the gate.

Were delighted to find ourselves in enormous permenant indoor stables, each roughly the size of a small indoor school. Moving in was accomplished & OH with Figjam as his minder was dispatched to the briefing. We then sent Echo off out for a little bit of pre-horse inspection exercise & they came back somewhat damp. Did our bestest to make soggy horse look like smart horse:

Passed inspection no probs - phew.

Friday was dressage day. Echo did a bit of early morning exercise in the hope of keeping as chilled out as possible whilst Boris had his 1st little foray to the main ring. We just did the BE90 arena event so we could get done 1st thing & not clash with the important one's dressage. Boris thought the whole thing was great fun & piled over the fairly small jumps with gay abandon. The Xc was all knockable but had some fun things like a corner, some narrows & a brush into an L shaped avenue of trees. Caught on camera to see him towing me round:

We ended up 6th so at least one frilly to bring home;)

Echo's dressage soon followed and wasnt too bad. Behaved himself for a change this season but a couple of mistakes soon bring the mark down but ended up on 60 which didnt leave them too far off the pace

The afternoon was spent doing back to back course walks which in my case involved once only & cutting a few corners whilst pushing the pram. The 2nd course walk was with A's 'Pro' partner & the measuring wheel to find the minuite markers.

The XC was very fair & nothing too horrendous but I do think that the experience of an Intermediate or 2 pre one star is a good idea. I think we may have had a few heart palpatations going to that directly from Novice. Even the 1st couple of fences are a good bit bigger & wider than anything you would find on a Novice track. The main worries were no 13a a very skinny log with brush behind with a curved related distance to another narrowish log as part B. Fence 14 was then a sizeable brush corner (as mentioned in CIC* reports!) but the fence that was catching them was a drop into dark woods with a curved couple of strides to a large water ditch then 2 strides over a narrow brush 'hedgehog', this was 16abc
Echo set off like a man on a mission: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVeTCPOR7M

He was superbly clear through 13ab & 14 but sadly was just going too strongly (A was told to attack it!!) when he got to 16 & piled in over the drop found himself facing a tree instead of the ditch & although they tried their best & leapt the ditch it was the wrong side of the flag & 20 blooming penalties. Flew through clear after a quick circle & finished strongly with just 6 time penalties.

I think most others put another stride in the water!!

One very happy horse finished with a very disappointed rider.

All cheered up with a few wines/beers on saturday night & Echo was fit as a flea for early o'clock trot up. He then show jumped as if he had done nothing much the day before, really unlucky to have 1 down as they both got a little too keen down the final line: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmkm36P3RKo
Waiting to jump:

First ever 3 Day completed & loads of good experience gained. We all loved the event, everything ran absolutely to time but with a lovely relaxed feel & none of the million rules & security that you get at other 3DEs.

HUGE thanks to Figjam, nevermind supergroom she is superwoman who can carry bales of haylage around on her shoulder. If Burgie 2012 makes it you will see us there again:):D

Oh did I say I was doing the BE100? Yeah well forget about that I think Boris had left his jumping socks in the arena on the Friday or had 1 too many at the party on sat night he wasnt in the mood at all.... hey ho...thats horses:rolleyes::confused:

Sounds like you had a great time - I am very impressed with the entourage and that your OH did his dressage in tweed!

Well summarised! :D

I had a really good weekend, it's always nicer to be involved than standing on the sidelines, so thanks for letting me tag along. :) Next year we will have to book Mr FigJam in advance as his photography skills are far superior to mine. ;) Not helped by the fact that I'm (rightly!) not trusted with any camera of any value around mud/horses...! ;)

If I were to ever be in a position to tackle a CCI*, I'd like to do it in as good a style as they did, they were very unlucky both with the 20pens on the XC and 4 faults SJ- neither was an "issue" as such and they will be all ready for the similar ditch Q at Blair in Aug I'm sure... ;)

Hope Boris is over his blip soon and back to his bouncy best (as per Friday's jumping, not Sunday's) soon.

Will see you at Eglinton and can I book a cheerleading role for Blair?

:D

PS-

to all those who doubted my abilities to survive 4 days in company of a small person- we even managed to be left along on a couple of 10min occasions with neither of us throwing too big a temper tantrum?! :p Mini-Joss is a very cheery wee soul, MIL did a grand job of doing lots of buggy pushing leaving me free to pick up poles etc though. :)

Ah sounds like a good weekend (won't ask about Boris) and that Echo has stepped up to that level with his usual 'can do' attitude (last saw him hedge hopping at Eglinton '10 - was that his 1st Novice or did I get that wrong?). So where to next, and is a trip to Blair planned?

Now that sounds like a really fun weekend and well done even though there were a few blips. Talk about in at the deep end, N to CCI* without any stepping stones - phew! Good luck at the next one. Loving that mini-Joss is already turning his back on the papparazzi (spelling?) :D

JenB- they have done a full season at Novice, when we saw them hedge hopping at Eglinton last year they were en route to picking up a red frilly though.

Rosiefan- they have done a couple of Int runs this year so not completely in at the deep end I wouldn't say? Like Joss says, just as well they had as the step up from Nov would possibly have felt rather large if they hadn't! (although knowing Echo & his rider, they'd have kicked on with their usual enthusiasm and been just fine! ;) )

Mini-Joss has definitely got horses in the blood already- she was happiest when cuddling up to Echo and Boris and not so happy when they were dragged away...!

FigJam you really are the queen of the smileys:- a smiley for every occasion.

Lec - glad you like the tweed, its closer the correct attire as per the rule book than top hat & tails are!! OH determined not to splash out on new clothes until strictly necessary (i.e 2*) He is scottish you know;)

Yey well done to everyone sounds like a very good productive few days up at Burgie (Bar Sunday!):):)

Mr Echo does like to whizz round and looks fantastic and a credit to yourselves for all the hard work you put in to get him looking like that :D:D

Good Luck for the next outing.

Aye that Figjam she can turn her hand to anything and is a very helpful soul and we would all be lost without her!!

Well done :)
Looks like a super (long) weekend was had by all! Echo looks fab sort - how is he bred?

Thank you :) He is a Dutch Warmblood by a stallion called Revenge W who was by Animo who I believe is quite well known by people that know about that kind of breeding;) He came over from Holland as a 5 year old having not done a huge amount (unusual) It appeared as if he had been tried as a proper SJ & found the whole thing a bit much - he had a tendancy to stand on his hind legs in the corner of SJ arenas!! He has enjoyed XC from the start & the SJ has gradually calmed down.

yes Animo is a name you hear a lot in SJ pedigrees. No wonder he made the SJ look so easy. He is a lovely boy - sure your OH will have loads of fun with him :) Are you not a tiny bit tempted to steal him ;):D
