Today my old pony who had his flu jab and reacted really badly to it, was no worse but definatley no better :( but there was a differance in him, his eyes were dull and he was so lethargic, we are nursing him through tonight and he is being PTS tomorrow :'( im devastated beyond belief, my childhood friend is leaving me, and i just dont know how im going to cope, all ive done for the past 4 days is break my heart over him. Im just so glad ive had all of these fantastic years showing, hacking, jumping and of him being my best friend that i will cherish forever.
the last few days have been traumatic but today he told me himself that he had, had enough

so sorry to hear this, :( sounds like you have lots of lovely memories of him and even though he'll no longer be with you in person he'll always be in your heart.x
 
So sorry, but hold your head high with pride, that for SO many years you have been a team, and you owe him this last gesture. Not many ponies get to his age, and by all accounts that makes you one heck of an owner.
Will be thinking of you tomorrow. x
 
Wow - I'm really sorry to hear that. I never knew a bad reaction to a flu jab would result in PTS. I'm so sorry for you but you have obviously had a fab time with this boy and have many happy memories.
 
personally I wouldnt do it yet - his body is reacting to the jab, the same as ours would, His immune system is producing the relevant antibodies needed. I would give him until the end of the week; they can perk up after a few days.

Your horse = your decision. Only you know what is best for your horse. He is a big age and you have lots of lovely memories, you have done lots with him and he has no doubt been your best friend, you need to do what YOU feel is right.

Its a hard decision to make and I wish you all the very best and i hope you can find an inner strength during this time. Big hugs x
 
47 years of age is phenomenal, be proud that you have looked after him so well to make that age.

I hope he is as comfortable as can be tonight and that tomorrow isn't too painful for you :(

I agree!!! If he is no worse, I would hold out!!

In which ever decision you finally make, I wish you the best of luck.. And if you change your mind, please keep us updated on his progress. I was going to create a thread earlier asking what had happened as I couldn't find your previous thread but thought I'd wait in case you posted again this evening xx

thank you all for your support, i would have held out if it wasnt for how dull and uninterested he is :( that just really isnt him, and he hasnt eaten much for 4 days and my Instructor seems to think he has a blockage throat as when he eats or drinks it comes back through his nose :'( its heart breaking to watch xx
 
When mine had a reaction to her flu jab, it was on the 4th day that she turned a corner.
Fingers crossed your old lad may be brighter tomorrow.
 
I agree with the above post, however my head tells me that you are more than likely making the right decision .

He is a fantastic age , and maybe his little body simply cannot fight it off.

My horse went very quickly, but my old Weimaraner had been I'll for sometime, but was still fighting, I did not give up on him as he was putting up a brave fight.

However, like you, one day his eyes just told me, enough is enough.

For a 47 year to be ill for more than a couple of days is too long IMO and well done to the OP for putting the horse first.
I hope tomorrow is as good as it can be in these circumstances and remember all those good times/
 
So sorry OP, I do understand the heartache. You know your horse and you know if what you are doing is right - it's always better to make the decision a day too soon than an hour too late. I will be thinking of you tomorrow.

It sounds like the two of you have had the most wonderful time together - if only all horses could be as lucky as your horse.
 
I am so sorry, how utterly heartbreaking.
For him to have reached such a grand old age, you must have looked after him really well.
The eyes do say it all, that was how I knew when my horse had had enough.

I agree. He has been a very lucky horse to have someone take care of him and you should take comfort in the great life he has had with you.
