After a hard day of competing what do you do with them the next day?? Do you give them the day off, take them on a nice long hack, ride as normall?? What do you like to do with them?? x
It depends if I feel brave enough to go for a hack as the day after she has done some hard work is usually a safer bet than the rest of time. Usually I'm not brave enough and she gets the day off though
The day after a competition our horses are given some light work. This is to work off any lactic acid that remains in their muscles. Lactic acid causes stiffness so following strenuous exercise somelight work the following day will get rid of it. The horses are then given the next day off.
Depends what level of work they have done - sometimes will give them a day off or if I have been xc or sj il take them on a walk and give them the day after that off.
Day off - but turned out or walked in hand.
I used to have to hack my old hunter the day after hunting because he would jump from field to field if you turned him out, showing off to his mates! But it was always really nice - giving him a really good groom to get any remaining dried sweat off, a plod down the village....
I nice long hack if it has been eventing or anything super strenuous otherwise just normal but definitely no jumping unless it was a dressage competition, they normally have a short hack and a schooling session each day... but all hacks just consist of walking!
I take Genie for a nice walk up the bridlepath just so I know she's moved about and not been stood in the same place eating all day. She also gets turned out so she has time to chill.
After an endurance ride then as a guide, 1 day off for every 10 miles covered. But that is with 24 hour turnout, so horsey can still move round to alleviate stiffness.
After a dressage test, then I would ride as normal the next day, as I see it as equivalent to another schooling session.
When I come home from eventing my horse gets turned out for the night. The next day he comes in and I hack him down to the river - which is about 20 mins there and back. I stand him in the river up to the tops of his legs for 5mins and then walk home again. I feel that standing in the river cools his legs down and removes any heat or swelling. Hope this helps
