The day we are dreading is drawing nearer,
how will we cope without your welcoming wicker?
The empty stable to folded rugs will only emphasis our loss,
you allowed us to ride you, but we knew who was boss!
You have seen us through the worst of times,
your beautiful head, the power the grace, the steadfast gaze, the love you gave can never be replaced.
Your time has come all to soon,
its been an honour to know you, run free big boy with those we have loved that have gone before you.
We have noticed that Dark_Knights horse Sir hasn't looked quite right, so he was scanned last week, finding a tear of the proximal lateral margin of the DDFT left hind. Prognosis is poor, and even with surgery and 6 mths box rest, return to any sort of athletic activity is guarded, plus there is a high chance of sustaining a similar injury on the other leg.
D_K has known this horse since he was 3 months old, (now 15 )and has hardly ever gone a day without seeing him, he knows this horse inside out and we have always agreed he is not the type to cope with not working. He hates it when the lorry goes out without him and stomps around the stable if he is not worked before the others. So on Wednesday morning we will say a final farewell to a horse of a lifetime.
D_K and the rest of our family dont know how we will manage without this wonderful horse, he is D_K's best friend, I joke that he thinks more of Sir than me! Sir saw us through the worst time of our lives when we though we were going to lose Mini D_K while waiting for his liver transplant. Sir always had a shoulder for us to cry on. listened and never judged. No other horse will ever replace him.
The memories of him will remain in our hearts forever, yes he could be a frustrating Muppet at times, he hated ditches and fillers to start with, I will never forget seeing him drop D_K head first into a ditch in front of a bank xc schooling, all I could see was a pair of long boots waving in the air. I am sure D_K will remember Sir for managing to make me look a fool most times I rode him, he always let me know that he was in charge and I was lucky to be on his back.
Sir has been a huge part of Minis life, from pushing his pram round the field with his nose when Mini was a day old, to pottering around the school behaving like he was carrying the crown jewels on his back. Not sure how Mini will take the news that Sir is leaving us for ever. My girls adore him and are both broken hearted that he will not be around fro years to come.
Sir may not competed to a high level, but he never had a xc fault while competing, he was a brilliant nanny horse and as herd leader at every yard he has been at kept order in the field without ever being aggressive.
A picture overload, and on Wednesday evening perhaps you can raise a glass to a horse that we can never ever hope to replace.
