You don't need to. A snaffle is alright. But it is preferable to have a pelham or double. You might look a bit out of place without.

Unless it's novice, in which case snaffle all the way!

Novice classes are for ponies in their first year/two years of showing. The schedule will specify if it's a novice class and what particular rules that show is following.

Novice status differs from show to show. For example, at P(UK) a novice is not to have won prize money of £10 or more. For NSP a novice is not to have won an open ridden class.

The schedule should give you all the information about eligibility for novice classes if it has one
