Watching this shocking documentary. Puppy farming on the most horrendous scale. Innocent/ignorant buyers buying them via internet.
Oh God, they've just said these places (filmed by BBC Scotland) have received massive financial aid from EU as farming assistance. One in three puppies die from illnesses such as parvo virus. One breeding bitch been used for dogs fighting. Horribly scarred. This needs to be stopped. Just horrendous.

Shocking programme. I can't believe Defra or anyone else haven't taken action, despite clear evidence that pups are being brought in illegally without passports etc, and that the Irish council found those kennels acceptable. Shame the programme wasn't shown at peak time so more of the idiot people who buy these puppies could have seen it!

Never saw the program but never understood why buyers don't do research on the dogs they are buying. If your buying a pedigree what lines do they have how are they bred? As dogs are as expensive as horses now why don't people research? They have the Internet in front of them. It drives me crazy. There is a girl I know on who has just bred her staffie. It's quite bad tempered and has a skin condition it's had pups and they are £150 each she doesn't have homes for them.

You need a licence to drive a car, the law should be the same to own a dog. Licence the owner, not the dog.

I am a dyed in the wool anarchist and hate red tape with a vengeance but the ignorance in this country about owning a dog needs to be addressed as it is out of hand.

Maybe that's another thing we'll get sorted after the revolution.... :)

Unfortunately people want a puppy NOW. They are not prepared to do the research and wait for a small hobby breeder to have the one planned litter, visit the pups when they are with mum and finally collect the pup at 8 weeks old. The shortest period of time I have waited for a pup is 12 weeks, because I know the breeding I wanted and I waited.
The Internet has fuelled the now culture especially in the puppy market. Just look at the ad mag. A few years ago there were pages of pups for sale now there is only a column or two. We need to change attitudes of the buying public.
Although this programme described a good buying scenario it would have been better to visit s good breeder with a litter of pups being reared with good conditions and stimulation etc.

What made me terribly angry and sad is that they are receiving big EU funding and that the vets and official bodies in Ireland are positively giving these places the authority to run as proper businesses. Those people are making big bucks through exploitation and funding via our taxes, which those authorities and officials such as vets and customs officials should be stamping down on.
As for the sadly stupid people buying the puppies, they need saving from themselves by having a proper enforcement of welfare and standards.

I wish big mouths like Ricky Gervais would stop demanding that hunters fall off their horses and break their necks or that the human race 'go extinct' and tackle the on the ground issues like puppy farming. He could do so much good but has chosen a volatile issue instead to increase his popularity (IMO)

Good point, I have seen a lot of likes of his posts on Facebook recently and the hunting one really got up my nose. Perhaps someone could suggest it too him.
