The 'draw rein attachment'

Ok so after my post yesterday about lunging my mare, a suggestion to try the 'draw rein attachment' sounded easy enough so had a go with it today!

Could anyone else that's used it let me know if I've done it right? Are the draw reins too long / short? Is she working as she should be?

Also anyone else with pics of their horses working with one please post as I'd like to compare how different each horse works in it :D

You can put them through a neckstrap :)

OP - looking good to me, maybe slightly long, bit just a tiny bit

Some people have suggested putting the draw reins through the legs then up underneath a neck strap to hold them up. Not tried this yet as this was our first go! I was more worried about them catching on one of her boots..
 
Dowjones I thought they looked a little long, but it's only when she's working. When she's stood still they seem a bit short lol. I did put a small knot in them to shorten them up a bit, might try a little shorter?

I'd say they're a bit long, not much though! U can try tying a knot in them at the wither making sure they're even!
I would say that ur horse could be stretching down more which shortening the draw rein should achieve!
I use this method alot with two horses at work and it works really well, they really stretch down and round in them which they don't seem to in other 'gadgets'!!

Rather a tad too long then a tad too short ;)
She's stretching down nicely with it at that length so I wouldn't be overly worried about it too much shorter.
 
I'm normally totally against gadgets, in particular, draw reins when used for riding and forcing a horse into a shape.....is it ok to use them in this way or does it cause any pain? I like the idea that I don't have to put a roller/saddle on first! I've got a horse who will be coming back into work in a few weeks, so can everyone convince me that it's ok to use them like this? Thanks

I'm not quite sure how I ended up with mine lol. I can't remember buying them :D

Buntybaby - thanks! I'll try a little shorter when I next lunge her and see how she works with that. Just want to take it slowly as she's not got a lot of topline, especially along the top of her neck! It's just nice to see her stretching out rather than bunching up full of energy and excitement!

Also I'll move my knot! I tied it to the side rather than on top as i can't reach very well to see what I'm doing up there haha :D but yes hopefully it will even them out a bit as I noticed one side ended up a little longer than the other :)

I'm normally quite against them too! Having never worked mine in anything but a saddle before on the lunge until now! I think it's great, the draw reins weren't holding her in the mouth and she stretched down out of her own free will, and trust me, this mare WILL protest if she's not happy with something! The reins aren't pulled tight and these weren't 'restricting' her :)

Great thanks. One of my friends has some, so I'll give them a try on dippy mare when she starts lunging again. x
 
Although it looks good, doesn't it make the horse sore under the elbows and across the spine? Wouldn't want to try it without padding of some sort.
