Um.
May i take this opportunity to share some "learning" with you all.... on the effect of E numbers on large hairy horses........

As you'll have seen from Hovis' diary on friday he has had a few issues with his manly parts and there was concern that he's not been drinking enough. The vets sugested to hubby to put some electrolytes that tasted nice in buckets for him to drink. As we didn't have any in they suggested as a stop gap to put a small amount of fruit cordial in the water to entice him to drink. As i was away hubby duely bought some Robinsons apple and blackcurrent cordial and put a tiny amount in his water bucket. Success!! He was drinking it by the huge bucketful. Hubby was most pleased and I was most relieved.
Then hubby took him for a trot round the field on saturday whilst i followed on foot with the dog.... OMG!
E numbers turn Hovis into a racing snake. I have never seen him go so fast in the whole of the time I've had him. Hubby couldn't hold him and had no choice but to let him burn off some steam. Three circuits of a very large field in gallop later hovis eventually pulled up barely breathing hard and looking very very pleased with himself.

Needless to say he's back on normal water for a few days then having boring old electrolytes from now on! The robinsons is down the drain....

OOPS!! I've heard of putting pure apple juice in but not cordial. How much did he drink?? I'm not so suprised though - cordial can be up to about 35% sugar. Wouldn't dream of feeding it to my cob, I'm certain it would have a similar effect

What happened to hairy cobs being safe, family ponies??

Yeah i rather think hubby didn't hear the vet right.............
It was less than a cap full in 10L of water so wasn't strong - thank god - we'd have still been there now watching him circle at full tilt!

Umm, could it be that he just feels better as he is now fully hydrated?

I know how terrible I feel when I don't drink enough, I can only imagine how big a headache poor Hovis had.

However, if you do prove it was the E numbers, be sure to let us know, so I can 'tempt' my lad to drink before we head into the XC course

Seriously I'm thinking of touting it to friends of mine that own race horses. Don't worry about drugs or drugs tests - just give them a bucketful of robinsons cordial and stand back!!

Keltiepeds - theres no way i could have taken a video - it would have just been a blur!! Its not in Hovis' way to be a slow coach but sheesh! Greased lightening is not the word!

Haha! Maybe try the sugar free variety!

I certainly will not be giving my hairy monster this - i didnt want him to have hayledge, fearing these effects, however he is fine (as long as the yard do not mix up his feed with the racehorse mix that his next door neighbour gets!)!

Dont you just love the hairys!

Sorry, but PMSL at the mental image!

Bet he thought it was great fun!

Just a thought, but could it have been the sugar? Is hovis usually ok with sugar in general? You can get no added sugar stuff.

Otherwise, i'm sure there must be a children-friendly no sugar no false things in squash? You know how its fashionable for parents to not want to fill their kids with junk - surely someone does one?

Oh this made me laugh, I've got visions of a hairy on speed!!! Now i know what to give my cob in the summer when he's feeling dozy and I've had enough of doing pony club kicks!

Made me laugh too! (sorry)

Chocolate digestives have the same effect on my non-hairy TBx. She doesn't normally have sugary treats (occasionally polo's), but she seemed interested in a packet I was munching one day. So I offered her one, and before I knew it, she'd scoffed half the pack (oh well, stopped me eating them....). Within an hour, she'd bounced around, half reared, landed on the side of my foot, pulled my shoe off, reared again, and landed on my bare foot. OWWWWWW!

I no longer eat chocolate digestives near my horse.

Laughed my head off reading this . I have to watch what mine eats. the smallest bit of sugar or protein mine goes nuts only problem if you go near him with coke or ice cream he steels it.

Blimey, who needs oats, eh? Sounds like a lot of reaction to such a small dosage though... could well have been helped by the spring grass flush too. My heavy cob used to get a spring in her step around this time of the year....
