Hello! Long time no chat! I am now back at college, following my work experience. This was due to be a period of six weeks but I could only manage 2 weeks before my back started playing up. I could barely lift without shooting pains up my spine and a dull throbbing ache when i stood up so my manager and tutor got together and agreed i had to quit. Now, two/three weeks on, I am back at college (first day back) and have seen my Dr. NOT good news. He examined me and was not happy with my lack of flexibility and he wants to refer me to a physio and get an x-ray as a precaution. However, that is not the bad news. He has signed me off for a month, NO DUTIES, NO RIDING, NO HORSES for a month. If no better, then my future with horses he said "looks bleak and unlikely" I'm 17.. spent a year training to work with horses, the love of my life.. and now it looks rather distant. However, POSSIBLY physio will help but looks unlikely given that i fell off eleven weeks ago and landed on my back, and i am still no better. Before it gets said (lol) its not lack of excersise, i kept moving throguh work exp and when i went home and its no better at all. Darn, Darn double DARN

You could be a saddle fitter, maybe teach, there are some interesting jobs in the offices of some equine welfare charities, what about being a chiropract or physio?

Well I really wanted to be a professional rider, training horses and running a livery yard. I love working WITH the horses, I loved the mucking out side of things and I don't want to sound ungrateful, Hadlow have given me the best training available to me, and I am very grateful. But everyone has a dream they treasure, and that was my dream. My tutor did discuss with me other job options but I know that in my heart I won't truly be happy as I was looking forward to achieving my goal which I was so close to. Just a shame and its really a bummer.

Oh I'm so sorry about that it is so frustrating and saddening but please don't give up hope. 5 yrs ago I broke ribs in my back and misaligned my hips falling off (no body protector) and 4mths later I thought I would never ride again, but after more intensive physio and properly structured exercise things started to improve and now I never get a twinge.

I wouldn't write anything off til you find out what is causing the problem. I crushed a disc years ago and it still niggles me now but I never had it treated and it just takes a lot of tine to settle.

Saying that our YO has just had back surgery as his nerves were being "squeezed" down his back - he was off work for months and laid flat with the pain and not being able to move - and since the surgery, he is tons better and nearly back to normal, the surgery has been a real success.

So until you know what is causing the problem (the xrays) don't panic, it might be something simple with a good chance of recovery.

Oh there is one of the therapies that is supposed to be really good - only the name has totally escaped me (old age getting me again... hee hee) and its all about posture and stretches and can even add an inch or two to your height...

Will add the name when I recover from my senior/senile moment...!

Been through same sysmptoms as you (and I don't work with horses but I was nursing and lifting patients at the time it started!) GP did exactly same as yours, went for tests/physio etc and they declared nithing wrong - did the 3 months off riding/stable duties and it got worse so started again (may be different with yours)

Battled on with pain killers for 10 or so years but was never pain free - then I 'twanged' it mucking out and it was excruciating - OH said to go to a chiro he recomended and I poo pooed it saying it's been looked at before, won't make any difference.

Anyway after 5 days he got fed up with me refusing, gave me the cash and made the appointment - Chiro found loads wrong - manipulated me back and said I could go regularly (monthly minimum) and he could get me pain free for at least 3 weeks a month (brilliant), or go as one off's when I've 'twanged' it and he would sort each thing at a time.

That was 4 months ago - I've not had a day of pain since!

Now you may have been down that route, I don't know, but it's certainly worth a try (as well as the medical checks)

hope it gets better
