The end of the road for Owen- help needed with rehoming

We had the vet and physio down to see Owen last night as he was clearly not quite right. And sadly it is not looking good for him. He is never going to have a career as a sports horse,and he is going to be retired and rehomed as a hack.

So- there ends my 4 year battle of trying to get him sound, fit and healthy, with much money sweat and tears being shed along the way. More tears to come too for when he leaves! I adored that horse more than anything and anybody else.Just hope that next owner will take good care of him.

We think that he will have a pain free life with just moving in straight lines and with not being asked to do flatwork, jumping etc. I just hope that I can find him a super home now, so if anyone knows of somebody who wants a hack- a horse that is the most beautifull boy in the world and who has a gorgeous temperment,and is only a 8 year old please do get in touch..
 
Oh no, not having much luck are you.
Don't know of anyone but will ask around as not that far away really. Any more details such as height, type of rider needed eg experienced etc?

Just sent an email to one of the racehorse rehoming charities (HEROS)to see if they have any ideas or if they can help.

Thank you Irish Cobs- he is a 16.1 hands TB, lightweight type but very well put together, and he does need a more experienced lightweight type of rider that is no more than 11 stone I guess.. He is sensible, and does not do stupid things, but would not want him to go to a complete novice...
He is good to do, no vices, and easy to look after, sensible hacking out alone/in company good in traffic..
 
Just hacking out- walk trot and canter, light jumping out on hacks. Fun/Sponsored rides. Just no schooling or flatwork or lunging, or relentless training and competing or hunting. He could go to the odd show just to do the 2 foot clear round jumping classes. Just as long as its a laid back work schedule that is not asking him to engage or do circles or use his back end much...
 
a friend of mine asked me to keep an eye out for a horse for her, she wants to do pretty much what you have described with him i think. Sorry i don't think i have followed his story, what is wrong with him? Will he need on going care, he looks lovely- it's so sad he can't carry on doing what you wanted to do.

He had kissing spine, which was successfully operated on last year, his back causes no problems now. But he also has a hock spavin, which means that he swings one hock outwards instead of flexing it underneath him, and this causes pain over his back end (saccroliliac) region, especially if he is asked to do flatwork, lunge or do lots of jumping. But vet is convinced that he will not be in pain as long as he does work in straight lines- i.e-that is hacking- and that he is not asked to engage or work from behind.
All he needs in terms of ongoing care is a good joint supplement and a good farrier and daily turnout in a nice field, and then he likes to be stabled at night with adlib hay.
 
How sad, he is a lovely looking horse. I am sure someone will be able to offer him just the sort of home you are looking for.

Poor you, how disappointing to hear that news.
Sometimes you just have to admit a horse isn't going to continue to be what you want either from soundness or temperament, but it's a really sad decision to make.
I'll keep my ears open, many horses down here live the sort of life you want for him, and just go hacking on Dartmoor with loads of tender care at home the rest of the time..

Will keep my ears open, there IS a lady at my yard that wants a horse to hack out with her daughter, she would treat him so, so well, just not sure exactly the stamp of horse she is after - can you PM me your number too pls

You know I think you have done the right thing. Owen will be far happier living an easy life with no pressure. Hope someone comes along quickly who is able to offer the life that Owen needs.
 
As others have said you really do deserve a change in luck. Sorry to hear that despite your very best efforts Owen is not going to come right for the job you require of him.

Cant help with the rehoming, but if I do hear of anyone will let you know.
 
Thats so sad .... Its a pity you are over in england, Not that long ago I would have been looking for a hacking horse, Due to having 2 boys and not really interested in jumping anymore he would have been ideal ... He is lovely ... Good Luck with him xx
 
Thanks HH and Guisbrogal- rather worried as have had people saying that no-one will want him as a hack because he is a TB ! Which is utter rubbish I hope.
HH- I'd LOVE him to have a home on dartmoor, he simply LOVES hacking in proper countryside that is just the sort of thing he enjoys most..
 
PMSL! I know it is such a funny picture am not sure what we are both doing with our teeth! Although Owen is pratically human and ALWAYS knows when there is a camera looking at him so that must be his attempt at smiling
