Oh dear, my horse lost a front shoe last week - the day after having a new set (!). The hoof itself didn't seem badly broken or damaged, but when the farrier fitted a new one (sadly I wasn't there) he's given him two completely different sized & shaped front feet. The offside fore is far too short, although there is no heat or swelling, he hasn't been quite right since last thursday and I havn't ridden him since, then today (Sunday) he is deffinately uneven. What do you think I should do? x

I would call the farrier and ask why this has been done and explain you're not happy and the horse is lame. If you haven't done that already that is

HUm what i see is, the shoe has been lost, taking some wall with it, so in order fo the shoe to be able to go back on, you have to use a smaller sized shoe.

If my horse lost a shoe the day after being shod (BTW The first week after shoeing is when the shoes are most likly to come off!) He would be a bit sore on the foot. It does not nessacerily mean that it is the farriers fault.

If it was me I would give him a week off. Sounds like he's foot sore from loosing the shoe.

Sadly there is not much you can do. I've been in your position before. To the untrained eye quite often it can look as though no or very little damage has been done when the shoe was pulled off and yet when a farrier comes to nail on the shoe it becomes apparent that the level of damage is higher. All I can suggest is time and patience. I'd talk to your farrier and suggest that if in a week there has been no improvement maybe he could come out and check the nails aren't too high etc. It might also be worth talking through a plan of action for the next shoeing.
