The farrier smacked my horse...

my farrier is brill when i first had him tabby was a bugger kept on hopping about when he did her back legs

he never shouted or hit her (he is allowed if she is really naughty) and because of that she now stands there like an angel and rests her head on his back

i remember at an old yard there was a farrier(quite nice looking) was shoeing the YO horse he was standing as good as gold and he just shifted his weight from one back leg to the other and he hit him with a file! poor horse jumped a mile definately put me off him!

If my boy was being really bad, then I wouldn't mind if the farrier gave him a smack, but if he ever hit him with the rasp/hammer etc I wouldn't be happy. I always stay with him so if he's being an arse, then i'm quick to tell him off myself.

Once, when I was at a pony camp at a riding school, my borrowed pony was getting shod and she had this thing about one of her feet, that she hated having it touched or picked up. So she was actaully being an angel and let him pick it up and put it the tripod thingee, he turned to get the rasp and she took her foot off and put it back on the floor. So he full blown walloped her on the belly with the rasp! I was shocked! She wasn't going to improve if he did that, and she was actually behaving better than usual! Poor wee pony

I went to school with my farrier!! And he knows I would eat him alive if he hurt my girly. However my girly is angelic and I can't acctually remember ever tying her up to be shod, she stands with the leadrope over her neck. This week might be interesting though as she is having a trim with a week old foal at foot!!!! Foalie is full of herself, little madam, but it will do her good to meet the farrier.

However if he has a naughty horse, he gives them a gentle telling off, followed by a warning, followed by a tap on the belly and a growl. Most then give up the idea of being silly.

My farrier has the patience of a saint and to my mind has often had good reason to give mine a hefty nudge with his elbow - but rarely has! They are never downright uncooperative, but certainly I put up with far less from them in the way of fidgetting than he does

If, God forbid, they were really rude then I'd allow him to administer some sort of reprimand simply because it's his livliehood at stake. I trust him to deliver no more than would be absolutely necessary.

I leave all but the odd 'behave' to him to administer! Having said that, I'd be mortified if any of them were actually naughty to shoe.

There was a rumour going around my area about a farrier (I genuinely don't know who he is) who was doing more than shoe the horses. He was caught in the act apparently at a yard when he thought he was on his own!! Scary hey?

well I hope he never meets my mare as she is very 'interested' in farriers - she comes into season every time she sees my farrier and 'winks' at him while being shod - all highly embarrassing.

Thankfully he sees the funny side and is very patient with her

All our horse (except mine) stand and are as good as gold with pour farrier and he too is very good. My horse has sensitive feet and hates having shoes nailed on and tries to sit on the floor, lean on the farrier, you name it he does it. He gets shouted at but never smackled (unless he's really misbehaving , and the he'll have a slap from me). His fidgeting is mainly due to him being a bit sensitive - if only he realised if he stood still the nails are more likely to go in straight! I do think he plays on it though sometimes - that's just his nature.

Our farrier did once 'tap' our donkey on the nose with the rasp - it was only a tap though and the donkey was about to trample him. The donkey was terrible for vet or farrier and you could not hold him. After his subtle tap and stern words donkey behaved impeccably and used to love the farrier - in fact he loved nothing more than watching the farrier shoe the other horses and stand by him when the hoof smoked from the shoe - he would actually inhale the smoke!!! We had to shooh him off. Honestly, think donk had a bit of an addiction, god knows where it came from - somewhere in his beach donkey past maybe!!
