The final fate of Shergar?

well if it is true i think its disgusting and reading that turned my stomach, its disgusting as that horse tried for all who was connected with it and brought a lot of wealth and happiness to many people and then to be multilated like that is horrible

If you were there, in the early 80s and heard gun fire, would you say anything? I know I would not have done! Transporting a horse held far more risks than shooting it - especially if they were in an area already known to support terrorism - people don't learn to fire guns on the job, they train beforehand, if you happened to be used to gun fire, you probably wouldn't have thought that much about it. Besdies, there is far less population around there, so it is entirely possible no one heard anything. As for turning the racehorse out in a field - someone would have noticed that one no doubt - sleek race horse turned out with shaggy winter ponies? It would have given away the location of the safe house etc in a flash.

I don't believe it's true, right from the start where a wife would stop a the vet going to do such a huge job for the IRA. If he'd been told to do it, in that climate he'd have done it.

Maybe Shergar is better left to rest in peace.

But surely if this was true, as said before, the bullets would have ricoched (sp) in the confined space and injured the shooters. Also how would you get rid of that much blood? And really how hard is it to kill a horse with a gun - first shot in the head may have missed but definately floored him (god forbid) but the 2nd shot would have done the job. The story just doesn't ring true to me

Remember the Hyde Park bombings where they thought nothing of killing those beautiful horses, will never forget the sight of them all laid out in the road....evil & sick.

Don't get me wrong, I am not agreeing with anything the IRA did - no one could believe that butchering any living thing in such a way (or any way for that matter!) is right but please bare in mind that the atrocities in NI were carries out on both sides - not just by the IRA.

For what its worth, my father was in the Gardai at the time of shergars disappearance and he worked in the area where they are talking about - north leitrim, longford etc. He always maintained that Shergar was shot, in the head, about 4 hours after he was taken. Regardless of his fab temperment, they were just not able to manage a 5 yr old TB stallion and they shot him. I don't know what truth is in that but thats what I was always told.

Really interesting, but does look like sensationalism. Interestingly, this comes out just 2 days before Stan Cosgrave is coming to give a talk in our vet college - including on his involvement with Shergar! Cant wait, he's an interesting chap!

I wouldn't say a stable was any more confined a space than rooms in buildings, and using burst fire from an automatic weapon in those situations is common. Besides, bullets entering a fleshy mass would not ricochet, it would enter the flesh and either go through, or lodge.

If I were doing it, I would have taken the horse to the burial site, say the woodland, and done the job there, rather than then having to move a body. If it was done in a stable, a hosepipe and brush would have got rid of the blood.
