Hello,

I have the oportunity to go out to the Gambia to volunteer for the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust for 3-6 months at the end of this year.

I have spoken to the head of Charity at length, and she is lovely, and I have looked on the foreign office and WHO websites however I was wondering if anyone had any experiance of working in this situation, and any knowledge about the stability of the country in this area (8 miles from Senegal!) it would be much appreciated.

I went there this time last year...only for a holiday but the people are fab even tho they are very poor! you will get bumsters hassling you for money and following you but if you are polite but firm no they would normally go away. I would definately reccomend you need a guide and would not go out alone at night!

sounds like a great project but im sure it will be sad too! we saw lots of sorry looking donkeys but the horses that did the tourist rides on the beach were well looked after!

I went to Gambia (to work with secondary school children) and it was amazing! All the kids were lovely and friendly, I want to go again!!

We did see alot of Donkeys pulling carts or just roaming about, it seemed if someone needed a Donkey, they found one wandering about and used that.

When we went, we say armed guards and armed police but no realy violence, I went with a small from school so I doubt they would allow us to go if it was that dangerous

You cant see this very well, but its a donkey pulling a cart

In the school play ground, we helped put fences up becasue the donkeys and goats kept on eating the children's economics work (growing plants etc),
