Yesterday evening whilst in the stable the kick bolt dropped down trapping me in with the nag. As usual there was not a soul around. I was not carrying a mobile, and only had with me a lead rope. After spending ten minutes trying to get the rope under the bolt to lever it up with interested cob breathing down my neck, I began to panic slightly. The door is too high for me to climb over (not being young and agile) then a John Wayne moment...I managed to lassoo a shavings fork with my lead rope and drag it into the stable and used it to press bolt down ! Whata relief I had visions of having to share horses hay net till someone turned up in the morning! Needless to say I am more careful about making sure kick bolt is right up.

As you mentioned John Wayne the truth of the matter was that he did not ride and a double was used. The double and the horse were still alive a few years ago.

:) I think it is now time to work on an contingency plan.:)
A) teach said horse to lift you up with it's head. Failing that...then..
B) tie a string to latch and fasten it within arms reach.

Option A would be a lot more fun but may have some risks attached :D

One of my kids did this too me!

I'd been really grumpy with him & had threatened to stop him going to his friends to play. I was changing a horses rug, he quickly locked me in via the kick bolt & ran away!!
He didn't release me until I'd promised to cheer up & let him go to his friends :D

Sounds horribly familiar!
