the groomers...

nope, does not happen often, when you think about all the hundreds of thousands of dogs groomed safely each year. It is possible the dog had an underlying heart condition - and unknown to the groomer. Lots of things could have gone wrong. I feel terrible for the poor dog but also the groomer - I bet she is absolutely gutted.

If I am going to use a new groomer I always ask if they have drying cabinet and if they do I won't use them as I know my dogs would be scared.

Really? How do you KNOW that? do they go in a crate ever? Or are you putting your emotions on to your dog?

Some dogs absolutely love them. We would never put a dog in who was scared and cant imagine any groomer would, They are not the easiest things to clean should an anxious dog open his bowels. We would never have a dog in ours for more than 5 mins and if Im honest I probably wouldnt put a Retriever in at all, particularly at this time of year when the dog is coming in hot. They have to be used sensibly but I think owners worry about them more than the dogs. :)

My dog loves his crate, but hates the noise my hairdryer makes and the hot air it creates, so it would never be an option for me either. For me a drying cabinet is an awful idea in general.

I know because Beardies are a sound sensitive breed and one of mine is particularly so. I perhaps should have said I wouldn't want mine in one but other dogs could be fine

I have used one for over 10 years. I find that many dogs love it once they've been in it once or twice, and come in to salon and look a bit cross if someone's in "their space". Any tool can be misused - I know of a groomer that accidently impaled a dog that sat on scissors she was holding. I know of a dog who's eye was cut with a dematting tool. Injuries and death can happen - but it's a bit like saying that planes crash therefore you'll never fly.
