Both organisations have said that because their owners are gypsies (sorry, i know that's not PC, but they're not 'travellers'), they're gonna find it very difficult / impossible to do anything at all.

Ahhh, no Lou! I'm so sorry, the poor little mite. I'm sorry that you had to see it, I can't imagine how you must have felt.

I wouldn't bank on the paper, look what happened to me. But it might be worth a try. You should be proud of what you have done in trying to help. God, this is just awful.

How about seeing whether H&H will report it?

These pictures you have taken should be shown, just to prove how ineffective these animal welfare charities can be. I am so sorry to read this post, how awful for you to have found the foal when you have tried your hardest to help them!

The thing is, the charities always do stuff with well-publised cases - it's the ones that are kept quiet that they dont act on. Why's that i wonder!?
The pictures are quite horrible, so i doubt they'd be published - they need a warning or people would get upset and complain.

You just cant win. By putting suncream on her nose, the mare's sunburn has improved 100%. Nearly all of the scabs have fallen off now and it's much less red. But because we've done that, the inspectors can no longer take the burn into consideration - the owners could just say that they'd been treating it too.
And if we had have cleared the field of all the crap, the foal would be alive, but the owners will still be K**b heads! Does that even make sense?!
Basically, we have to NOT feed them, not worm them, not treat the mares' sunburn or mastitis or photosensitivity, not clear the fields of rubbish and ragwort and not fix the fencing! So we have to leave them to suffer, so the inspectors can see if the owners are doing anything.

How sad. Poor little thing. I never can understand people who use nylon headcollars on foals; anyone who has foals knows the mischief they can get up to. The mother will get over it, let's hope she doesn't get pregnant again

Don't blame yourself, you did everything you possibly could have done under the circumstances and within the law.
 
What a sad story. You did your best short of acting outside the law so please don't feel guilty although I can quite understand that you must feel despairing that no-one from the animal charities seems willing to take proper action.
 
I know it's hard, but you've done all you can. For your own sanity take a step back and see what happens. Keep on ringing the rspca and the ilph, and get your friends and neighbours to do so too. Ring daily with updates...

Just do not treat this mare yourself, do not feed them, don't do anything. Hopefully with you on their backs the ILPH and such will DO something. sadly that is the only way this will get sorted. The more you do for the mare the less the charities will do.
 
With having a gypsy foal myself, this story has really touched me. The mare does look underweight to me but not the worst ive seen. They would class the loss of weight from her foaling.

My foals have leather headcollars on, when in the field they dont have any headcollars on, they are good and stand for me to put one on them when im going to lead them.

Im currently working on a horse that has come from travellers, shes the most untrusting horse that i have ever seen, she follows me about etc but when i go to give her affection she will tense up, she used to actually shake.

Its not just travellers that need taught a lesson, was at a yard recently where an old friend keeps her horse, i could have cried when i saw the place, arena waterlogged, paddocks filled with rubbish and massive stones, fences that look like if the wind blew too hard it would fall down, horse poo all over the place, the horses are lucky if they get a wheelbarrow of shavings each, they are all thin and depressed looking, one horse hung itself recently, headcollar caught on the door latch. Why do people insist on leaving headcollars on their horses while in the stable!
 
Oh no, I can't believe it. This is headbangingly frustrating. Why will no one take any action??????????????????????????????????

Get the local rag involved - I simply cannont believe the apathy of the bloody RSPCA and ILPH.

I am beyond words..................

Good for you for doing "your bit" to try to help the horses - I really respect you for it! I can understand how frustrating it is as Ive seen a similar case of neglect but like you say, the RSPCA cant/wont act until a horse is at deaths door. I thought the new acts were supposed to help people stop needles suffering

A friend of mine had a similar problem as this with the useless pathetic RSPCA, she phoned the head office and told them that if they did nothing about this and she meant immediately she was meeting several of the local newspapers and TV crews at the field and would be going public with their pathetic lack of action, give it a go but mean it you can get in touch with local TV news papers etc, they will all pick it up as it will sadly make good news to them, the other option is call the police if they have the time to turn up! but I say the media are there for such things use them!!!

I have and will never give any money to the RSPCA for the terrible job they do I have never had a successful outcome when dealing with them, the situation stated above where the media got involved it was too late and the mare was put down as soon as the RSPCA were forced into action but then they do seem to put them down rather often instead of giving them a chance in my opinion!

I've been following your updates and I cant believe it's come to such a tragic end.

I know it's very hard not to feel guilty but Do not beat yourself up over this. As people have posted to your updates, you could of found yourself in serious trouble over taking them (& I dont mean by the law)

Thank you everyone - it's so frustrating isnt it! I went to the yard yesterday, where some of the gypsies stable their driving horses. I'm friends with a woman there who has 8 horses (4 or 5 of which she bought from the gypsies out of pitty). There was a new horse there, who the gypsies bought from Beeston Market auction the day before. My friend said that they'd got it to the yard, unloaded and tried to put it straight into a trap. It didnt want to, so 4 of the gypsies (all big men - 1 of them being the owner of this mare & foal) surrounded him and beat him into submission with sticks!!! This is the sort of people we're dealing with here - how can we win?! That poor pony is now on 3 legs - God only knows what they did to him when they left the yard.

OMG, that is so terrible. You did all that you could though and im sure the little foal is looking down thanking you for that. I nearly cried when I saw that poor poor mare. How people can treat any animal like that is totally beyond me.

Where abouts is this? Can you PM me please.
 
I saw a similar beating to a pony at an event and later called the RSPCA who told me unless I got it on film theres nothing they could do....

Oh no that is awfull news, ive been following your story and im speechless, poor gees.
You shouldnt blame yourself you did all you can, its just such a tragic accident that shouldnt have happed. I never leave head collars on my horses when there out and i take care of my feilds, just not worth the risk.
Trouble is people like that done give a [****] about the state of the field they put their horses in.
I had a similar situation, horses left unattended in field which looked like a tip, no water no grass, old mare looking very poor in with a stallion that continually pestered her, called RSPCA they came out and said mare was no different to when thay had checked her a couple of weeks previous, she was fine. She was found dead in the field a few days later.
Then shortly after a small couloured pony appeard in there, she also didnt look too good, she was also found dead a week later the stallion who was quite large kept mounting her and ripped all her insides

........and poor you to have to witness it and feel so helpless. Just to echo everyone else, you did everything you could legally do, it is ridiculous the welfare bodies still have their hands tied by the current laws. (NOT exonerating the RSPCA, btw)
It is so sad, and be careful with your plan, please please don't put yourself at risk.
 
I have been following your posts - you really did everything you could legally do and should be proud of yourself for caring. I would write to the H+H with your story - it should be brought to light. Perhaps now the owner will have to give up the mare? Do let us know how the story continues, perhaps if we can no longer help the foal we can at least help the mare?

I am sorry that neither the RSPCA or ILPH have done very much about this incident. Do you know the name of the ILPH inspector who attended as I would like to directly take this matter up with the ILPH.

that is just awful poor horses.
its so frustrating that authorities cannot remove animals from ignorant/cruel/incapable people before one dies/nearly dies and prosecute to some kind of effect.
i really feel sorry for you to have to be caught in the middle.
foals esp shouldnt be left haltered unless it is leather and the field is safe.
what a horrible situaton
