I'm really interested to see that in some of the pictures the reins are not held crossed over which I always thought was the normal way (i.e. the snaffle rein between the ring and little finger or below little finger).

Is it just rider preference?

I was always taught to cross them but then people started telling me I was wrong to cross them I keep them crossed anyway so the rein that gets more pressure exerted on it is not the curb when I tweak my hands (though, I very rarely use a double anymore!)

I was always taught that you hold the curb rein in your 'second gap' (i.e. snaffle rein in gap between little finger and next finger, curb in the next gap over) if you wanted a 'softer' curb contact. But if you wanted a stronger contact with the curb then to have the curb rein on the outside of your little finger.

Not sure how if there is any truth in that or whether its just an old wives tale though! I always tend to ride with the curb in my 'second gap' as I'm always I'll drop it if its just around my little finger!!

Agree Alf looks tubby but I couldn't tell if it was the camera angle. Love the photo's though - MAT patting Totilas, pics of FB's favourite mare whose name now escapes me, Donnperignon and Valegro all stand out

Re. the reins, we had a similar discussion last year with Fritzens I think when somebody spotted Gareth Hughes riding with 3 reins in one hand and only one in the other hand - yes, down to personal preference or what suits that specific horse best I guess.
