......I ask do you think that there is a class system in horse ownership...for example is there other owners who can buy what ever they like for their animals, where some will struggle to meet next week's rent.......I have friends that have the lorry, the latest rugs, clothes, tack etc.......and other mates that it can be difficult to find the money for next week's rent.......however,their horses always come 1st,but,might have to go without the latest" must buy's "in the horse market..........and I've been to shows(local)where this is quite evident......what do you think!

aslong as ur horse is well cared for in good health it doesnt matter where the items come from. i save hard and have "named" tack but little of it... but if i couldnt afford what people class as the lastest must haves aslong as my boy is happy and healthy thats all that matters to me

In all forms of life there are those who have and those who don't. In the horse world I think it is even more evident when you walk around the lorry parks at shows

I don't think that having money is a bad thing, buy what you want if you can afford it..and although we stereotype the 'haves' as generally being pretentious but useless, there are people in this catagory who are quite successful. for those who ride less and pose more..whatever..if it makes them happy and their pampered neddies aren't suffering...

I am a 'have not'...it would be nice to be a 'have', I think

I don't know about a class system...

It seems to me that it's not that simple - there are people with all the latest gear who win, and those who come last - and there are people who don't have all the latest stuff and win, and some that lose...

Not really a very helpful answer tho!

im definately a one who dosent, however looking at my lorry and my two horses you might think im one that 'does'. But ii never ever have any money for myself, it all goes on my two horses and on the lorry. But i wouldnt have it any other way! And im definately not a snob!

I see the extremes that you talk about but the majority are in the middle.

They manage to keep horses and have a few nice bits here and there.

Those who don't spend quite so much on gear tend to spend more money on training etc.

Swings and roundabouts.

i had a really old saddle (circa 1800's) that fell apart and i now have a new saddle that is great for the horse but i cant stand (looking to change!) its not the lastest tack or lorry that makes u and ur horse successful but the hard work that u put into them. u only get back what u put in

Oh god, I hope no one judges me from my lorry. What ever you have there will be someone who has more, and no doubt someone who has less - at least we horse peole have our lovely neddies to make us happy, they don't care how rich or poor we are.

mmm, unfortunately what with credit, the have nots become the have debts!

Spent a fortune on my horse when I first got him but it's all being paid off now.......

I like to look smart but I hate named tack. (like I hate designers clothes with the designers name all over it) I am lucky in the fact that when I have a horse my parents pay to keep it. However we only get new stuff when the last falls apart and we have still rugs and saddles to fit 14.2hh ponies because they are worth very little money but if you had to buy yhem new they would cost a fortune. But whatever you spend if you have a horse it should come first no matter what.

One of the most successful people on our local BSJA circuit is the one who turns up in the oldest, tattiest lorry.

The question was

Nobody mentioned money making you successful

I like looking at all the expensive lorries at comps. Gives me ideas on what to do on mine next. Currently checking out 'living'
So to all the 'haves', if you see a strange old geezer peering in to your smart lorry please dont worry. He's not after your stuff, just inspiration!
PS I'm very happy with what comes out of the back of my lorry (most of the time)

I think the only time this becomes an issue is when people clearly can't afford to keep their horse(s) properly shod, with adequate feed, veterinary care etc. I know lots of people who make sacrifices - holidays, car, eating out - in order to keep their horses and that's just a question of priorities. But I firmly believe you shouldn't own a horse unless you can look after it properly yourself or afford to pay others to do that for you.

I'm not sure. I haven't met any like that to be honest. All of my boarders, both in England and Canada, seem to buy whatever they like for their horses. They aren't late in paying their livery bills to me and will pay up the money for the farrier whenever I ask them for it.

In England perhaps it was a bit different as all of my liveries were quite well-off, but over here they are just regular people and they still seem to have no trouble paying for their horses.

The names over here aren't so big though, so when people buy a rug, they just buy a rug......not like me who always buys a Rambo or a Fal.

I admit I do like the best of the best but I certainly don't look down on others who don't see this as a priority.....and I only like the best because years of experience has taught me that these horse goods usually last way longer than the mediocre goods; so in the long run I actually save money.

Honestly dont think either makes a difference results wise - results depend on how happy the horse is, your riding ability etc etc now what latest gizmos you have - i have seen both 'haves' and 'have nots' ride incredibly and win so yeh honestly dont think it matters.

Class system in horse ownership? Of course there is. Some must have a Devoucoux saddle or possibly two, a couple of Passier bridles etc etc. At the other end of the spectrum others have a Wintec saddle etc. You can't just single out horse ownership though, this happens in all walks of life. You can have a mobile phone for £20 but you can also have one for £300, shoes at £15 & shoes at £500. While there are vast differences in earnings between people there will always be a monied class system.

I think I must be somewhere in between - I don't have to worry whether I can afford the next feed or vet bill, but I don't have the money to buy a flash lorry or put in a sand school. Whilst either of those would be nice, I don't feel bitter or envious of people who can afford those things - usually there is a downside - they might have to work long hours and commute long distances to earn that money, or perhaps the deal entails sleeping with an ageing and/or unattractive OH

!

Agree with the others in that it happens in all walks of life but i think it is more evident in the horsey world.

I am someone who buys nice things for my horse but cant afford the best and hardly any of my stuff is 'named' but its all in good condition and well looked after. She has everything she needs and i wont go out and buy stuff for her 'just because' as i cant afford to and yes if i do want the latest thing out then i have to save and wait for it.

Most of my money (apart from her keep) goes on competition and lessons as i would rather that than the latest fashion accessory.

I however have no money left over for myself

is that all you have to do..why didn't anybody tell me before?

*off to find rich OAP and plan indoor arena*

One of the most pikey, messiest people riding rubbish horses I saw on Sunday at BSJA had the biggest and most expensive lorry. It means nothing. Just because Victoria Beckham wears designer clothes and spends a fortune does not mean she is happy or has any talent.

I think its not just about money but background too - i know plenty of horse owners who don't necessarily have the best gear/lorry but instead have parents who are willing to sacrifice alot for them or live on a farm so don't have livery costs. And there's always those who were able to buy a house before the property boom who now have excess equity and low mortgages...more money to spend on horses!

i often think if my parents had given me a bit more support with horses i'd be making a living from them (horse, not parents).... instead the selfish bu**ers frittered it away on boats/french soil etc... ....I AM JOKING!!!
grin.gif

I think this is most deffinately the case

this isnt quite the situation but a livery on our yard, buys a £60 rug for her pony who trashed the last one in 2 days becasue it was cheap!, has all top makes equipment, spends stupid amount giving her horse a sweet itch injection weekly......but only attends to the horse at the weekend and thats only the kids who will go up and ride the poor things like theres no tomorrow then get dumped back in the field. They live a 30sec walk away, drive past on there way home and donteven get out to check the horses! (theyre out 24/7)
the kids have been on holiday all Xmas and i have seen them once, ive been at the yard from 9-1 ish everyday. if i was that age id be dying to ride my ponies!

where as my friend whi is up everyday playing with her horse, not saying she struggles to pay the rent, but cant go out and buy a £50 rug without having to save for it

Some things are a bit of an inujustice IMO

Ah but there's also the other group very well of people who spend very little on their horses and still use granpa's old hunting saddle and jute rugs.
In my experience the hroses are always very well cared for.
Then you have the opposite erm 2equichav" types who have not got loads of money but some how always have the latest thing for their horse.

Very well said

Actually at my yard, almost everyone.. actually no, EVERYONE is better off than me financially and swan around designer clothes and brand new 4x4s, BUT they are soooo cheap!! They scrimp by shoeing only when shoes have all fallen off, don't vaccinate or worm or provide the grooms with basic stuff like cotton wool and pevidone when their horses get hurt.
PF on the other hand may not have the best tack in the world (well, the pink stuff is great!) but it's very well looked after and it fits and her bed is always deep (I buy extra shavings) I think, without getting all big-headed, that she's very lucky
