Bucas rugs are also a good fit for Tb's prone to rubbed shoulders. Roma's poly pad type numnahs are good as they seem to have quite a good shape to the spine.
Mark Todd Rugs are also fab- tho MT Brushing boots dont adjust enough for skinny legs and slide down (causing much fireworks ;-))
GFS and Collegiate bridles in my opinion are a wont break the bank but lovely fit on a finer TB head.

Acavallo gel pad!! like Snopuma has already reccomended. They are amazing, makes my saddle fit perfectly and is very discreet under the saddle. I use it on three horses; 2 warmbloods and a high withered tb. Definitely one of the best pieces of equipment I have in my tackroom.

Not a tb but thin skinned and thin coated WBx here. I also found the thorowgood girth mentioned by sidesaddlegirl rubbed horrendously, now have a stubben cord girth which doesn't rub. Just wish they were easier to find, I want a brown one!

Anyway how do people find the reinforcements by the girth on le meiux saddle pads and numnahs? I've found that my girl gets rubbed where the girth passes over the edge of the numnah and I'm looking for solutions.... At the moment she has a couple of Buccas Max saddle cloths that both rub like this and I'm wondering about alternatives. She has an ancient and threadbare hand-me-down jumpers horse line plain cotton saddle cloth which doesn't rub but I'm not sure that buying new ones would work or whether it is the fact that it is ancient and threadbare that makes it ok. I've been toying with the idea of a bit of dead sheep from le mieux but don't want to make an expensive mistake....

Suggestions for where to buy stubben cord girths cheaply gratefully accepted too! ;)
 
My girlie is being backed at the moment and I went to watch her being ridden at the weekend. In an hour the girth had rubbed holes in her sides, bless. She has skin of the finest paper! So... She now is the proud owner of a numed girth sleeve of the finest and most expensive sheepskin! Currently having saddle issues as the saddle I bought in feb doesn't fit so got to go through the whole rigmarole again.
Woof wear overreach boots don't rub her but anything with extra padding or shaping does...
Rambo and Amigo rugs fit her but nothing else does.
Generally, the more expensive it is, the better it suits and fits her.

This thread is lethal. I can feel some shopping coming on as my TB is way underdressed re. sheepskin!
 
Just wondering what boots (if any) you all use on your TBs for turnout? I've only had my boy a few weeks and usually put tendon boots on him for going out but didn't bother today as he was on his own and the silly boy managed to stand on himself! Cue blood everywhere! So any recommendations for over-reach boots for turnout would be super too :)
 
I find the Weatherbeeta rugs fine on my high withered beast but I can't use the combo ones as he has a big shoulder and his neck is too long.
I just use any large overreach boots and buy any high withered numnahs. I have a Falcon saddle which I use a pro-lite pad with which my saddle fitter recommended.
 
No advice about equipment (my TB is normal shaped and not prone to awful rubs)

but...

make sure you're with a good insurance company. Best buy you can invest in with a TB around :p :D
 
She's not a TB but a high withered WBx with very thin/sensative skin.

I use the Le Meiux hi-wither dressage cloths and Professionals choice girths, which I think are the newest design, ven tech. She's had to have a saddle made for her as she's also narrow at the wither as well as high. I chose flocking to allow for her unusual shape which seems to work well and she's very happy with this set up.

She also has an elevator bridle(supersoft)with a sheepskin shadow roll and wears regular WW boots.

Lunging is as some of the other posters have said, a bungee over the poll.

If my girl feels anything just the slightest bit uncomfortable, she'll move like a moose and I'll know all about it. It takes nearly 30 mins to tack up at times and we don't leave the yard without much stretching of legs, pushing back of ears and the removal of any skin wrinkles:rolleyes:

Many years and many ££££ have gone into this list and I have that many discarded and failed bits of tack, you wouldn't believe!!

I have the half pad and the plain dressage saddle cloth(no dead sheep). Half pad is great, doesn't rub anywhere. The saddle cloth, well I only had it on for a dressage test, but in that time it didn't rub :-)

I have Tri-zone brushing boots, but they're rubbing the hair away too. :-(
I don't want to have to get sheepskin/fleece lined brushing boots as her legs get too hot.
 
Worst thing I ever brought?
Tattini Saddle cloth, we only used it for one 5 minute dressage test and it had rubbed him raw, the blood had actually gone through the saddle cloth, and it wasn't a thin one!
 
Wow....aftdr reading this thread i'm really glad the tb thinks he is a low maintenance cob who lives of freash air :D do find the numed high wither gp saddle cloth is great tho, dont use half pads or risers....in fact only have the saddle cloth to keep saddle clean......he is a tb honest :D
 
Having accidently - yes genuinely it was an accident he's that big boned in the knees etc that I fell for the Irish sports horse trick then after tracing his bloodlines & speaking to an old owner - he's full TB, I'm finding this thread fab! He's 17.2hh btw he's a monster lol!

He came with an Amigo no fill & my cob has the same, although a very good fit it can only handle so much rain & then just seems to soak through! So as a result now invested in a Gee-Tac no fill which fits lovely despite the high wither & is 1200 denier letting nothing in!

Has any one had any success with the premier equine rugs in terms of heigh wither & neck length? He has the longest neck in the world so want to make sure I get the right one as he'll be out all winter.

Also any success with full neck fly sheets - he was going nuts yesterday with flies as hes so sensitive so he went back out in the gallop sheet he came with but an awful fit & only goes half way up his neck. Wondering if one that holds the neck up over the ears would be best & Ive seen a decent one on Derby House own brand atm.

He seems to be fine in any saddlecloth aslong as its pulled up & he has the half sheep skin pad ontop. His Wintec 2000 fits him lovely on a narrow plate. Hes in over reaches 24/7 inc turned out & I find the robinsons ones that are just very soft flexible rubber work fab & dont rub him at all. He also has woof club boots all round which are fab.
 
I had to have a mtm saddle for mine (which was before we knew he had KS), but Thorowgood make a saddle for high withered horses that I have heard has suited many TBs, and is lightweight too.

Once I retired him, I was able to easily sell his saddle for very good money. There seems to be a lot of horses this shape and the standard saddles made by all the usual saddlery companies don't seem to cater for a TB with a very high wither. :confused:

I used bandages as opposed to boots, because I never found a boot that didn't rub him :rolleyes:
I had several sets of equilibriums stretch and flex that I would continuously keep washing so he could always have a clean set on :eek:

Rugs. Horsewear are the only brand I bought for him, and they fitted very well.

My horse is so sensitive to fly bites. He's allergic to horsefly bites and they swell up like golf balls and then more often than not, become infected and ooze, and the swelling then starts to spread under his skin :( He is also dangerous to handle if horsefly’s are about, and he will freak out, regardless of the person on the ground trying to lead him. With all that in mind I custom made a special horse-fly proof rug for him. I bought the Rambo sweet itch rug, but the horsefly’s would still land on it and spike him through the rug. So, I added a layer of rouched mesh on the top of his back, which has helped a great deal. I also sewed the foot part of a pair of tights in the ear holes of that rug, and he appreciated that too :D

Other than that I just keep him and his kit clean and that seems to be key. Now he's retired he doesn't need to wear boots/bandages anymore so that's one less thing to worry about!

He's just my giant, cuddly pet now :o
 
Mine is a chunky type with huge shoulders as well as the withers so I find the Amigo rugs aren't generous enough and rub his shoulders.
Premier Equines come down to his fetlocks while still being tight at the shoulders

Weatherbeetas are good but the Takas not the landa plus highgrove or belmont stable rugs.

Black country saddle with wither gussets and a Kieffer out of the box and the HKM Gently range of saddle cloths if you don't want to go down the dead sheep route.

If you do want sheepskin, this girth is brilliant and it comes in black which is quite discreet.

Re necks on rugs, I have a detachable necks for one of my wb Takas which works better than the integrated ones as there is more room to move.

And for demudding ticklish areas this is acceptable where a brush is not

Another vote for Le Mieux half Sheepskin Dressage pad :) worth every penny

I don't use a girth cover just a good quality leather girth

My amigo Insulator is by far his best fitting rug though he also has a rambo that suits and weathabeeta turnouts fit him well but weathabeeta stable rugs, coolers etc dont

Having read this thread I think I have a particularly easy TB though. I only really have problems with 'own brand' rugs when I've tried these as they're not so roomy around the neck & wither
 
Forgot to mention my TBs sheepskin collection :D. When he was ridden he had Mattes sheep skin numnahs and the professionals choice sheepskin girth :D

Oh, and when he had an abcess, I used a Davis Boot on the foot, but I had to pad out the inside round his pastern with a strip of sheepskin, so not to rub.
 
def amigo/ rhino/ rambo rugs. Weatherbeeta, mark todd are worst fit.
chest bibs are the way forward but not the lycra ones- the padded roma ones.
HKM saddle cloths are high whithered and way better quaity than nuumed. Or if you want to splash out then euro star or anky if you pull them up enough.
Girth sleeves are a must. I have a KM elite one for the dressage girth.
Cleaning bridles regularly with the most natural tack cleaner you can find. Mine rubbed her face raw after using one with a lot of chemicals.
 
Not much help to you.. But when I was in Florida few months ago, went to a tack shop and I saw and bought a synthetic sheepskin girth that is washable , my high wither mare loves it, will get another next visit, she has an old style wintec hi wither saddle that suits her.
 
Mine has a treeless saddle, the HM one.

Hi whither griffin sheepskin saddlecloth,

Sheepskin sleeve with pro choice doulble elasticated sides.

Does very well in weatherbeeta rugs.

Never feed sugar, cereals, hayledge etc.

And super fly cream to cover his thin skin breast and ears in summer or he is attacked by flies.

Old mac boots as he just cant manage at the front barefoot.

And a rain sheet for those summer heavy showers.

While riding, a seat made of super glue and a decent body protector. An exercise sheet. And keep your fingers crossed while hacking that it doesnt rain heavy while out as you'll have to fight the TB not to try and walk backwards all the way home or hide his face between his front legs, or sometimes both!
 
NuuMed are very proud of the fact they do not use sheepskin - they use only wool which is sewn into a knitted background. It's a good product, much cheaper than sheepskin and does have some of sheepskin's benefits, though not all in my opinion. You can also hunt down low pile sheepskin numahs that take up less room and will have less effect on the balance of the saddle - thick pads can lift the front more than the back, especially on narrower horses. It's also a vegetarian product (not vegan of course!) whereas sheepskin definitely isn't :D

There are many saddles that do work with TB shapes but one type which can work especially well is flexi-panel saddles of which there are a handful of brands.
 
Well the old rescue mare who isn't mine but seems to be a permanent lodger , I have sheepskined to the max with great delight BUT the Rambo fly rug is pulling back on her shoulders and rubbing her withers to the extent when I undid her rug tonight to lift it forwards carefully I got chomped and now sport a huge graze and lump on my side with the force of her reaction ( I yelped in pain having never been bitten with real intent before). Poor girl has been wearing it 24/7 these past few days and now is telling me she has had enough.

Vest suggestions greatly appreciated as I am very new to the sensitive high withered fine skinned tb club.

Heather moffett back saver or wither pad depending on the atropy

Sheepskin stitched to everything else and never ever use chemicals on em :rolleyes:
