The horse flies are out :-(

I hate seeing horses being attacked by them :-( thought my boy might be ok as he's chestnut but they're all over him. Think I might have to get him a fly rug xx

My poor horse was attacked by the blighters yesterday on a hack. She was so good despite being bitten, I hopped off and walked along side her, and killed about 8 of them.

I did giggle though as smacked one to kill it, therefore smacking D. His face was a picture! I had to apologise for hitting him ;-)

I had a really horrendous hack out last year on the share horse I had. We took a wrong turning and ended up in long grass where they were lurking. He knew I was killing them for him but he got into a right state ..at one point he reached back to bite his side and I though we were going down. Still smazed that he didn't bolt as they were so bad. However after that he became fly phobic and the slighted hint of one had him hopping amd jogging.. I was so relieved to get back in one piece.

When I caught in, the boy was covered in them, ridiculous amounts. I was swatting at them, he was swishing the tail, kicking at them, poor lad was ecstatic to come in! They seem to stick their heads in almost, urgh, horrible things.

Yep, loads appeared today here too- flying along with us whilst riding, coming back again and again even when swatted. Aaaargh!!!

Poor boys get really upset by them. Bay tb #1 has worked out now that I can kill them after I swotted a few that were on him and now presents me with them to kill. Nothing like a large bay belly heading in your direction at speed. Meanwhile bay tb #2 comes up in a big lump when he gets bitten.

TrasaM, that was me this morning, not a pleasant experience. The grass is so long around my hacking route at the moment, and its very wet after all the rain. Hopefully once the fields get cut things might improve, otherwise its going to be very short, early hacks for us this summer!
