Programme on channel 4 tonight 8.30.

An award winning horse breeder now squatting in a derelict farmhouse with 52 unhandled horses !!!!!!

This documentary apparently follows his story so I'm presuming it's not
current and the situation is now resolved.

Will probably make for some uncomfortable viewing either way.

I will turn it on but i will probably end up turning it off within 5 mins.

I can imagine that these 52 horses will be mistreated, so upsetting to watch!

No way could one man cope on his own with 52 horses

I found the programme extremely sad. Although there were obvious welfare issues going on with the horses.... the thing I found most sad was the way a life event had caused this man's downward spiral in life and how society had kind of failed in a way that his life had descended into such squalor. I appreciate he would not have welcomed formal intervention but the guy seriously needed help and not just with the horses. Thank god people like Michelle exist .... she must have the patience of a saint and just hope through her quiet perseverance she can help not only the horses but the guy himself too. Incredibly incredibly sad. :-(

This man's daughter was killed in a horrific accident. His life ended, he lost his family and his home because of it. He cared for the horses as best he could whilst living in unimaginable squalor. He needed help. Instead he was prosecuted.

I personally didn't think that the horses were that badly off, there were some welfare issues I agree but I'm afraid this programme for me just highlighted what total plonkers the RSPCA really are :(

I actually enjoyed watching this programme. Some parts made me sad but I also had a good chuckle with him as well. He was such a character :)

Especially when so many idiots in uniforms were running round the field chasing ponies that even if they did get near couldnt catch because they didnt have a headcollar or rope  And all the while he sat munching on his sarnie chuckling to himself :D

I thought the lady that helped him was a saint and I hope they continue to work together to resolve the welfare issues.

I also thought it made the 'charity' *cough*business* look extremly silly and unprofessional and thats always a bonus in my book ;)

I agree with Antw23UK it was funny to watch. Then we had the army/camo brigade trying to dart the pony!!
The RSPCA really have no idea !! Just another bullet in the foot for them
I felt sorry for the man his horses were in a better state than some i have seen!! He was trying to do his best for them in such sad circumstances. I hope the future holds better for him and yes Michelle was a saint bless her x

Such a shame, the poor man needed help when he lost his daughter, he is suffering mental illness, it was so obvious that he was/is an educated man who has lost his way. If you listened carefully to his words when the programme maker was questioning him - despite him asking them not to - it was so clear he is a broken man in need of proper professional help. I hear you saying he would not accept the help, I appreciate that, but surely someone has the training and ability to help him to a certain degree ?

As for the horses, there are plenty in worse shape and owned by people in far better shape than this man. They were running plenty of ground and if the colts were removed the numbers would stop increasing. The lady trying to sort the horses out was nothing short of a saint.

The RSPCA would have done better by spending the money they wasted on taking him to court, to get a scrap man in to tidy the farm up, which would have given the horses and the poor man a safer place to live in and on.

I fear high lighting this case could result in the wrong type of people trying to find him to offer 'help' of the wrong kind. I hope not.

I felt terribly sorry for the man, his life was turned upside down by the death of his daughter.

The horses were not in bad condition, they gave him a reason to live and he looked after them better than he looked after himself.

It is a shame that the RSPCA felt the need to prosecute this man whilst they allowed horses like Spud and Carrot to starve in a field, but then perhaps they were not newsworthy enough.

As for the bod with the tranq gun - words fail me!

Thank God for people like Michelle, she is a saint.

I just think that they should have given him help to get them all on a worming program's And yes sell a few. Control the breeding as they did. But then left him alone and monitored it. There's alot of horses way worse off then the ones on there. Give him help as and when he needed

Oh yes need we not forget the person with the gun in full camouflage gear .... I am actually laughing so out loud right now :D

I think they spotted her!!

I wondered what they were using, 2 darts and 2 hours later the little horse was still full of beans and still the 2 dozen RSPCA bods could not handle it.

Beggars belief.

How do the RSPCA think they get Exmoors etc off of the moors-tranq guns? lol. I got a moor bred myself which 4 of us managed to bring in, load and travel 100 miles and unload without the need of camou gear or drugs.

poor bloke, I've seen a few of these hoarder programs now and many of them seem to start with a bereavement :(

Totally agree with all of the above posts, felt real sympathy for the poor guy,Michelle was brilliant in the way she has gained his trust & is trying to do all she can to help him. As for the rspca well i wont go there!!:rolleyes
There were actually some quite nice horses there who clearly trusted him & have others have said seen plenty a lot worse off who dont receive any help

I just watched this on catch up this morning and was pleasantly surprised how good a condition the majority of the horses were (bar the lack of worming and so many colts) however was not surprised at the utter ridiculous, immature approach the RSPCA took to catching one horse. I had to agree with the man when he was asked why he wasn't helping them 'Well they are meant to be better educated people than me and I'm just a country lad'. Did the RSPCA not realise how stupid they looked running after a horse thinking they could outrun it or a group of them flapping round making the animal even more frightened. Their approach proven even more crazy by the fact the man stood in the middle of the herd and they didn't bat an eyelid:rolleyes:Bleedin' useless morons.

As the woman said 'He goes to bed in this, wakes up in it and has no electricity or water, and everyone worries about the horses'. Remove the colts, get everything on a worming programme, clear the land of scrap and give the guy some major support and guidance. Don't drag him to court and give him fines that means he lives in even more squalor.

Well said :D

I shouldn't laugh but that remark rang a bell.

There was a case in the newspapers years ago that I've never forgotten. A dog was injured in a motor accident and an RSPCA inspector decided it needed to be put down. Apparently, he borrowed a gun from an attending farmer and he decided he was the only person qualified to do the deed....and promptly shot himself in the foot!

Sorry, misplaced humour, and not funny at all for the poor dog, but it is rather in context!

The horses were not in bad condition at all. If you looked at the bag wrappings laying about he was feeding them on alfa-a oil for some of it, thats not cheap feed. There were some stunning looking horses in there. Nor would I have described them as "wild"! More un-handled.

RSPCA just looked like the bunch of dolts they are. And two hours and two sedations for the horse, sorry but that's just animal cruelty!

Have just found out we bought the dun mare in the photos from this man a few years ago.

Emma was a lovely little thing, she was rideable and very sweet and loving. Her foal, who we bought from him as well, is stunning.

He's always had an interest in where she ended up and was heartbroken to have to sell her.

Am so much angrier now i know I know this mans animals... Lean she was, emaciated and neglected she was not. :(
