The horse market right now

Glad to hear it is bonkers at the minute actually. I have just started having a browse (not in a position to buy yet for another year or so but just getting my bearings) and I can't make heads or tails of what the going rate is for anything.

Can we please have pics once you have him? I live a new horse thread!

Go on then. But give me a week. After my experience with the last one I'm not planning to celebrate until he's been here a while and proved sane and normal. There is absolutely no reason why he shouldn't be, but the whole thing with the last one seems to have turned me into a terrible cynic.

I think it depends what you are looking for. Ex-racers, poorly put together cobs, your basic warmblood or sports horse (again not well put together) are easy enough to find, they may have quirks/no history or not much of an education.

The above but with a nice proven temperament you are now paying for the safety factor as there is not a lot of market competition.

Good sports horses have always made the money whether it be a grassroots horse or advanced eventer/Dressage horse.

The gap in the market is for the smart all rounder that is a safe hack, easy to handle, jumps a course, etc. 7 - 12 yrs. I believe this is in part due to the last recession when people cut down on their breeding stock as well as a lot of warmblood or tb blood being bred in. Don’t get me wrong I have had some great warmbloods but they are not the same as the good old egg traditional Irish X for those of us who can’t ride everyday and just want to have fun!

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask £6k.

Perhaps it’s time people are realising this? Probably not, but food for thought.

We are heading for an enormous recession and horse prices will go through the floor shortly. Which just makes it even worse that prices are so inflated. Anyone buying a horse to sell on right now is going to lose a lot of money.

If anyone is buying now with a view to sell at a profit they must be living in a different world to everyone else as it is clear we are going into a recession and if they cannot see that then they deserve to lose money especially if they are buying at the inflated prices we are seeing, if anyone got caught out by lockdown they should be able to sell now provided they kept one step ahead and the horses are fit.

I would hope many are finding good long term homes now with owners who had the funds ready, are in secure employment or possibly, like the person viewing one here this weekend, are retired and were seriously looking before lockdown, our viewer put a wanted ad up to find something to last long term.

The facebook adds for 13 week old puppies have already started. People have started to go back to work and so now want rid because the puppy "isn't happy with my neighbour popping in once a day while I'm out" sooooo sad

Puppies trebled in price 2 months ago, even the guy selling point of lay chickens had sold everything and more early on.

Those selling puppies on might want to look at the new legislation. Lucy's Law.

You’ve totally hit the nail on the head there, as well as in a nutshell described exactly what we’ve been looking for ? I’ll keep trying in the hope that something sane and sensible and robust turns up!

I have noticed the same in Oz. There have been a lot more advertisements from people 'WTB' their next project/eventer/unicorn etc. I am sure by the end of the year a lot of these horses will be back on the market.

Definitely true about the Aussie market, Can't believe it! When they realise hay prices haven't really dropped and the winter starts to bite (like this morning, -3C), those horses will be flogged off to no end. I actually haven't noticed a drop in horse prices like I expected, in fact probably gone up a bit (perhaps people working from home have more time to work them in the daylight?). Been interesting to watch it!

I also wonder if it is location specific. I’m in Scotland and we are still under stricter rules I have two nice 3 year olds ponies for sale. Blank canvases but no medical or behavioural problems and not major money at all but I just seem to get random text messages saying I’ll offer x and pick up tomorrow. X is usually a couple of hundred pounds.

I’m in no rush to sell by makes me wonder if people don’t want to travel or maybe just a market for ridden horses as people want to be out riding!

Oh I totally agree. It’s not my intention to sell, just musing what money would have been put into her and a guesstimate as to what I’d need to break even.

My intention for her is to take over from my boy as he gets older. Obviously if she doesn’t end up suiting then she will be sold once she’s made a nice enough person.

Having seen lots of recent incredible wanted ads, I think a lot of people need to realise a horse is a real luxury, not something to be bought on a whim for fun.

Forget about getting a safe kids pony. All of the ones I've seen have been sold in a matter of hours. I'll try again in September!

Not looking but surprised to read how many horses there are for sale and the high prices. Agree there’s a big recession coming and some tough times for folks. Hope all these animals find good secure homes.

Also makes me value my own even more !

I expect there are people thinking about the future who are working from home, saving money due to not commuting, having more time due to not commuting, thinking no holidays or leisure activities for a long time & decide that buying a horse will amuse them.

I think sometimes there is a tendency for people to spend their way out of depression. Sadly fact of life some people may also have inherited money from excess deaths of elderly due to coronavirus.

Also parents thinking how to amuse kids if schools remain shut for a long time & social distancing remains in place & kids can't play with other children.

Yes lots of people will loose their jobs in hospitality sector but not everyone will be in that situation.

My sister works for a plant nursery. Online business is booming as so many people doing extra gardening.

I paid silly cheap money for my young horse last year and spent out on having him properly started under saddle etc. I still have forked out less than 2.5k for him in total at this point and have been made offers of well over twice that..!!! He's not for sale but it's been very tempting..!!!! ????
If you had him hacking out and schooling round a small course you would get £6k for him in my neck of the woods!

Where as we have been inundated with people messaging wanting retired racehorses - but they only want them on our loan option! Not to buy them! I suspect its so they can send them back when they are too busy/get into winter/have no money and just want something to play with for a few months.

People are always wanting something for nothing and the amount of people that ask if the horse comes with tack and rugs means I scrap them straight off of the list. If they don't understand the principle of taking on a horse straight out of training they clearly haven't thought things through properly.

My friend is looking at the moment. Prices seem to be very high and she doesn't want a world beater. I'm advising her to wait until the market gets a bit more realistic but you know what it's like when you want to buy something :)

I will pray for you ?? I’ve been looking since lockdown but seriously for the past two months and it’s awful at the moment, everything good is getting snapped up! I have a viewing I’m really excited about this weekend and I’m really hoping this hell will be over!!

I was pondering it this morning as well. Mine is now worth about 7 times what I paid for her and her value will only ever go down now realistically. Its a shame I'm attached to her!

That is always the case! I am in the process of training the next one for my kids - at least then I can guarantee I can get something the right size/temperament etc when they need it!

I’m searching at the moment and the prices are ridiculous. 20k for newly backed nothing special 4yo. It’s so frustrating.

I've just found out that a small local dealer had five vetted for sale last week after adding 50% to their normal prices!

.

I had planned to start horse hunting this year and have called up about a few. 1 i would have gone and seen had not lockdown hit, now i wont as after some research i have found out he is dangerous and the other i could have gone and seen but only if i was happy not to see it trotted up or tacked up and to stay in my car until they brought it out to me!

I think i will wait a while but in all honesty cannot see me buying anything this side of Chr...... (not going to type that word in jun!) ;)

Horsequest ad 230804.. am I missing something- 10k?! is the breeding amazing?

A quick search didn't bring up anything amazing in the breeding, the dam is now 24 and does not seem to have produced much at all, sire didn't bring up anything interesting, the bloodlines may be good but so are many, if that is the best photo they have I would want to let her fill out a bit before starting to work her, probably very recently imported.

Tbf I’m viewing 2 tomorrow...! 1 unadvertised and 1 a little older than ideal (13) and not straight forwards... I did only start looking during lockdown but I also changed jobs to allow more horse time in January and have worked in person not from home throughout so I don’t think it’s because of corona!
