Hi Gang

Just wondering if I could get some pointers out here!

I'm completely new to this town, having just moved out this way for work. But I still have a huge hole my life. Something horsey. Despite Cheltenham seemingly being very horsey, apparently shares are very far and few in between? I have been regularly scouring FB groups and popular sites to little/no avail.

Coming from the Surrey direction it's been quite a shock as it seems there was never ever a shortage of people looking for a sharer!

The alternative of course is owning ones own. But having regularly shared for years I know what it entails and I'm just not ready for it quite yet. And if I did own I'd only consider a home for life type situation as horses I'm involved with are like family. So it would have to be long term.

As you can imagine considering starting from nothing to having a horse is quite daunting and I'd really rather dip into full fledged horse ownership slowly if possible.

So I think sharing at first would be the best approach. But where and how to find them out here seems to be a mystery. I've noticed that there are a lot of polo yard and high end eventing / competing / producing yards up here. I'm not particularly after that. It's one side of equestrianism I've just never been terribly interested in. Something I can simply spoil and enjoy hacking out with is what I'm after.

So some suggestions would be fab. Do people still tend to advertise for sharers in the post office or tack shop. Or do I need to wonder into yards and ask which isn't always the best approach being a random strange person and particularly a guy as we're relatively rare in the horse world.

Cheers!

Id also try and find local tack shops. The ones around me (only about half an hour from you) often have adverts about loans and shares :). Good luck.

there's a facebook group called Gloucestershire Horse Riders, may be worth posting there about what you're looking for. Alternatively a few riding schools here offer loan/ share of riding school horse (ride a set amount of times per week, and look after as much or as little as you like) for a set amount which may be a nice start :)

Definitely get on to Gloucestershire Horse Riders and Gloucestershire Horse Riders:Wanted/Selling on facebook. They are very very well used, in fact, it's hard to keep up with all the new posts. If you ever need to buy anything or sell anything, put a post on there and you'll be sorted usually by the end of the day.

There are a lot of professional yards around here, but there are plenty of leisure riders too so I'm confident you'll find something in time. If you ever just need to spend some time with horses, you are more than welcome to come to mine. I have 11 here that love attention and the big boys especially, so if you fancy coming and helping with a bit of grooming in the field and giving out lots of cuddles, you are more than welcome to PM me so we can discuss further. It's very private here and a very peaceful place to be. Unfortunately we don't have any ridden horses here, but they are all wonderful for a good fuss.

You should also pop into Countrywide in Gloucester as they have two notice boards in there. One general and one equestrian. Another place you HAVE to know about is New Hunt Horses between Huntley and Newent. It's the other side of Gloucester from you but it's an Aladins cave of a tack shop. It really is amazing and if you go in and pop a notice in there and let Sue know what you're looking for, she'll keep her ear out for you as she is extremely well connected.

Depending on your ability there has been a lady looking for a home for her chestnut TB gelding for MONTHS. He's near Tewkesbury.

TFC - I have no connection to this horse whatsoever!

I promise.. we are a friendly bunch round here lol, apart from the non-horsey people from Ciren who think we are the plague and I quote "posh toffs" .. ooh and never bring hunting up on Spotted: Cirencester.. We get all names under the sun!

Thanks! I have been on that FB regularly and been posting a few times asking about shares, where to look and about the best shops to look at ads but have had generally no replies!

I have been doing very regular sweep looking for suitable arrangements alas to no avail. If there's one you've seen do paste it across and I'll try and find it.

(Couldn't find the PM button so pasted my message here)

I quite liked your suggestion. I actually haven't ridden for awhile but just the routine and activity that goes with horses is what I rather miss.

Back home I've been regularly helping a traveller rescue case, bless her. Clearly abused by men so it took her 2 years to trust me. Well worth it mind you as I have had many great years hacking. After 10 years of her knowing me I couldn't possibly say goodbye just because she was getting on too much to ride. (Seen this a lot sadly) So have been happy to make the 30mile round trip to go up and make a huge fuss over her which she adores! Not bad at 28....going 128.

The hard bit is leaving her of course, she has become incredibly loyal and probably spends all night wondering why I abandoned her. So I'd love to offset this (somehow) she's truly a family member. Thankfully her owner (70's,80's!?!) still gets A-DIY help and the yard is fab.

So as I'm sure you can relate, I have a huge hole in my life! Rescue centre help would be ideal but not many around here? I did have a go at the local RDA which was fab, but my 9 - 5.30 routine means I can't commit to this any more sadly.

And thanks for your other advice. I'm going to be heading back home towards London today, but will be back up on Mon after the BHW. So perhaps we could work something out ahead?

Haha. Great one.
