I've just been watching the Olympia coverage and the brilliant musical ride by the Household Cavalry and was wondering why they make the horses lie down? Is it something they actually used or just a show trick? :)

My understanding is that horses were used as shields at war - the soldiers would get them to lie down so that they could hide behind them.

Oh :( I was under the impression that it was so the whole cavalry could hide too, not so the human half could hide and the horse half could be shields.

That is shameful :(

My great grandad was a calvalry officer a long time ago.

He was out on patrol when his horse went lame, so he got off and lead it home. After a while, he realised they were being followed. He got the horse to lie in the road and sat behind it with his gun propped over it.

He was right, he was being followed by a pair of afghans. After a bit of a standoff, they scarpered without firing a shot. He got the horse up and headed home.

He said afterwards that he was rather glad they had run off, as he didn't have any ammo!!!!!!!!

I don't think you can call a man walking a lame horse home heartless for using it as it is, a peace of equipment. It was more than just a shield, and the sight of an officer behind it was enough to scare off the enemy without a shot being fired.

But yes, thats why they train them to lie down.

nativetyponies, you really do relish in being a horrible person, shame on you.

Read the comment again QF and think. I don't think it was a horrible comment in the way you think it was. Many horrible horrible things have been done by one human to another in the name of "war". Human shields, killing off of the mentally handicapped, the gypsies etc etc.

Of course, perhaps its me that's barking up the wrong tree...

Well, rather the horses get shot than the humans, as far as im aware horses couldnt win wars for us!!! The soldiers needed to use anything they could to survive, it was war afterall, none of us can possibly understand the conditions they lived in. If it wasnt for things like this having to be done, imagine how some of the wars may have turned out...

Its sad horses were sacrificed in war and im glad they are not used now, but we owe a lot to these sort of sacrifices.

np, I loved it, until I got to A level and had to correct my teacher at just about everything  He made such ridiculous mistakes that I dropped it in the end. Couldn't stand his general making stuff up

From the Household Cavalry Website

The Rough Riders
Stablemen, commonly known as Rough Riders, in the yard, ride the lay down horses. Historically the tactic of laying down ones horse emerged when scouts could move fast into enemy territory and then "disappear" in the long grass when they laid their horses down.

They would also use their horses as a firing post, in an emergency, as they would offer some cover from fire. There old skills are an integral part of the routine today.

Then why is it whenever NP posts, you're not far behind? Pretty chummy for someone who seems to hate her!

Excuse me, Im certainly not a follower, and wouldn't be able to get that close behind NP anyway, as she is so far up her own backside she could turn herself inside out, and where did i say that I hated her, I wished her a merry christmas earlier. So its one of those ducky, get your facts right .

I was there when one of the Monkey Boys couldn't get hos horse to lay down... hurr hurr it was hilarious!!!

(NTS: do NOT drink whne at a show.....)

There's a difference between arrogance and having sucked most breeds of egg.

Even if NP's head was up her ass, she probably does it better than most forum users will ever know how, so I'd still listen to what she has to say!

And I'm not exactly her biggest fan... but I can accept that!
