I would be interested in any information/views on the practice of the collection of pregnant mare's urine which is then used in the production of an HRT drug called Premarin.

Any first hand experience from a visitor to one of the ranches would be fantastic!

Thank you

Canada was one of the major contributors to providing PMU to Premarin, however all contracts were not renewed a couple of years ago. There are hardly any farms here in Canada providing this now and once their contracts run out (this year I believe) there will be no more from Canada thankfully.

From what I have found out, Premarin have just moved their collections from here to Europe, using and breeding thousands of WB's now to fund their seedy little business, hence the influx of more WB horses in Europe now.

Sad and I don't know why women can't get their heads around the fact that there are so many natural and synthetic alternatives.

I thought alternative medicines were being used to replace Premarin, therefore the PMU farms were closing in the US..

But from what Tia's said it appears thats not the case, Sad really when there is an alternative to this cruel practice

but are the alternatives as 'cheap' - after all this way they milk the mares and get horsemeat as a by product (or get gullible brits to buy the youngstock instead of buying better british horses)

I think you will find the biggest farms in Poland and that area, although as far as I can tell they are German owned, so you get your foal from a WB mare that has done nothing, but the sire will be something recognisable..I'm thinking AI in that part of the world must be a very lucrative business to be in.

Funny this has come up because I met a lovely lady a couple of days ago who works in Family Planning, not one to miss an opportunity I asked her about Premarin. Of course she knew Premarin but did not know WHAT Premarin was - she was horrified when I told her and promised to look into it at the practice where she works.

My GP also did not know where Premarin came from.

I think the way forward is to target non-horsey people otherwise we are just preaching to the converted.

I would be really interested to find out more about Premarin and any production in Europe - any ideas who I might be able to find out from?

Thank you for your help

I am carrying our a survey among the women where I work and so far the returns seem to show that none of them know about the ingredients in Premarin. When I asked a doctor friend of mine if he told the women he prescribed the drug to what it was made from he said "hell no - then they wouldn't take it!"

Thanks for your help Liz

Do you have any information that Premarin is being produced in Poland? I would be interested to find out more and also I have friends out there who could do a bit of investigating for me.

Thank you for your help
