My friend is getting a horse after a few years out of the saddle and spending all her time round my horse! She's a capable rider however that experienced!

Wants me to pick your horsey brains about the 'ideal first horse breed'. Open to everything but doesn't want anything too cobby! Height doesn't matter!

Any suggestions?

Cob, take one set of clippers remove hair pull and trim mane and keep them to the correct weight and they look lovely.

Problem is people overfeed these beasts and then they just look awful

George is thoroughbred crossed with ID/shire (I think) and has a wonderful calm laid back temprament, he's a bit chunky so you feel like there's something to hang onto!

irish draught x tb, ideally 3/4 or 1/2 bred. big generalisation here, but in my experience the kindest, most generous and forgiving, and talented, breed. brain in the right way round (unlike some WBs!), extra leg when requd, sane, friendly. well, all mine have been anyway.

I am a recent convert to the Highland breed because mine is wonderful. She's my 4th horse rather than my first but she would be great for a novice.

Doesn't want a cob because presumably she thinks it will be a plod that she will have to pony-club kick everywhere? They can be forward going and competent in many areas of equestrianism, and for a first horse could be ideal. They are hardy and as long as you watch their weight, shouldn't give too much trouble.

Anything cross bred is worth considering or anything native (except welsh -sorry)for lowest maintenance and easy handling

they are wonderful, but as you know, can be difficult to find!

Yes, I know that I was extremely lucky to find her and it was all thanks to you for pointing out the ad - lol. My daughter and I both rode her today and Hannah says that she sits at school daydreaming about her - not too much I hope as it's the start of her GCSE year!

I agree. Got my first ISH in February. I will never get a different breed again.
