This was sent to me by a chum. I've googled the subject names on the title thread, and am surprised that the attachment below doesn't seem to have achieved world wide attention.

Is it right? Is it a load of nonsense? If it's true, then I'm staggered.

Alec.

"Pope Benedict, Joseph Ratzinger, has scheduled a meeting with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano for Saturday, February 23 to discuss securing protection and immunity from prosecution from the Italian government, according to Italian media sources.

Ratzinger's meeting follows upon the apparent receipt by the Vatican of a diplomatic note from an undisclosed European government on February 4, stating its intention to issue an arrest warrant for Ratzinger, who resigned from his pontificate less than a week later.

In response to the February 23 meeting, the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS), through its field Secretary, Rev. Kevin Annett, has written to President Napolitano, asking him to refrain from assisting Ratzinger in evading justice.

The ITCCS letter states, in part,

"I need not remind you, Mr. President, that under international law and treaties that have been ratified by Italy, you and your government are forbidden from granting such protection to those like Joseph Ratzinger who have aided and abetted criminal actions, such as ordering Bishops and Cardinals in America and elsewhere to protect known child rapists among their clergy.

"Your obligation to the Vatican through the Lateran Treaty does not negate or nullify the requirements of these higher moral and international laws; nor does it require that you give any protection or immunity to a single individual like Joseph Ratzinger, especially after he has left his papal office."

Would agree that this is absolutely staggering if true.

However I was under the impression that the Vatican City, although wholly surrounded by Italy, is actually a separate state. Therefore whilst he remains within the Vatican, even if no longer as Pope, the Italian government would be unable to do anything as he would not be within their jurisdiction.

I am another who thought that the Vatican City was a state in its own right so would be interested to know how this would affect things IF its true. also in a wider sense could priests take some sort of refuge in the Vatican City if they are being investigated for wrongdoings?

This could explain why he has 'retired' from the papacy, as he would be expected to leave the vatican city if he remained as pope. Presumably he can remain within the city state until his death, unless of course, he requires specialist medical treatment, in a hospital.

You're both right, though I suspect that the inferred protection only exists whilst the "accused" remain within papal protection. Once they leave the Vatican City, they are then liable to face world justice.

What I don't understand is how this article hasn't reached global attention. I've done some modest research, and it seems that The ITCCS are a serious bunch, and not to be ****ed with.

"IF" the article is correct, then why is this still on simmer?

Alec.

I don't know if this is true or not, however , I did smell a rat as soon as he announced that he would resign the papacy. I strongly feel that there is far more to the story than the Vatican would have us all believe. I am watching that space with great interest.

Ah, come on, any crackpot can set up a website and Kevin Annett is just another saddo with an axe to grind.

Reminds me of Ragwort lady.

The Vatican and every other international organisation has a big shredder for letters from weirdo's.

It appears that the vatican has a big shredder for letters from survivors of priestly abuse too!

The fact that the world isn't standing to attention, would support your point, but are you saying that The ITCCS are an Annett scam? Do they exist, and are there grounds for enquiring thoughts?

Alec.

Thank you Janet, and others too. I suppose that the lack of media attention was the clue! Not that Ratzinger was innocent of any crime, but that no one could be bothered. ;):D
