The joyless bucreaucrats of the RSPCA

I've just been reading the comments and there isn't much love for them, is there? I have to say when I've dealt with them in the past I've found them snooty, arrogant and unhelpful

What a waste of resources

hmm snooty yes! I was told "you're just choosing the pretty ones"(??) so went and bought a kitten privately - nice and simple - and much cheaper..wouldn't go back to them..to much trouble, much easier to buy privately. Our Vet agreed with us. Sorry but that's the truth.

The Devon Donkey Sanctuary and the RSPCA are two of the richest charities in the UK. It seems to give them the idea they are the 'chosen few' with the right to dictate all animal welfare. They go way too far on far too many issues.

We (my family and I) have approached the RSPCA 7 times about taking on elderly dogs, we dont mind the not so pretty ones, or the ones that are not in good health, they had nothing in so asked us to leave a contact number and they would phone us when something came in. we've left the number 7 times and not heard a single thing, i refuse to believe that over the course of 2 years not one older unhealthy dog has come in.

Weve also approached them about taking on ponies elderly or only suitable for companions. not heard anything about them either

we live a mile down the road from a large RSPCA shelter which has stables etc.

Instead we have gotten several beautiful wonderful elderly dogs from other charities, we have never worried about home inspections as we have always passed every one of them that we have had. currently got 2 gorgeous golden retrievers, one from the golden retriever rescue, one from a belgian rescue society. weve had dogs from the NCDL, local pounds, the cinnamon trust etc.

Ive also contacted them with a complaint about 2 starving horses (2 absolutely skelatal and one dead horse) the 2 starving horses had broken out of thier field and were on the road. RSPCA didnt want to know anything about it.

Doesn't surprise me in slightest.

When we rescued a cat from them whilst filling out forms for her a family came in with a kitten they had found abandoned. They had tried to contact the centre before they left but couldn't get an answer so came in anyway even though over hours drive. They were treated like dirt by the centre manager and told they had no room so couldn't take the kitten and they should take it back with them. It was only when the father (a big burly chap) stood his ground and had a mini argument with the manager that they agreed to look at it and subsequently take it in. Their attitude was appalling but only another example of behaviour i have seen many times before.

they are bloody useless, when i worked in kennels we had many dealings with them, they will refuse animals in desperate need of their help even when they have plenty of room, one lady took a husky pup that she couldnt sell the last of the litter it was 10wks old and they wanted to put it to sleep as had no room. why why why put a pup to sleep when they could find a home just like that????, i personally go to local kennels that take in strays for dogs as i hate the thought of buying a pup when there are so many dogs needing new homes but because the rspca are so crap a lot of people think that other rescue centres are the same.

I got a dog from the Bath one, they said they needed to do a home visit, then they didn't bother.. which I was surprised about.
The adoption thing went well but was a bit deflated when I sent them an email to let them know how he was getting on and noboy even bothered replying!!

I also reported 2 horses with feet in a pretty bad state and they didn't seem particularly interested in it.

Also I remember them trying to strike off Richard Meade from the charity a while back, I think it was somthing to do with the fact he was pro hunting and it was a bad image... I used to work for him at the time and remember the papers coming to take photos of him with animals all around him!!!
Just because someone is pro hunting, it doesn't mean that they don't care about animal cruelty...

Hi, I am new here but thought I would like to add to this story....my mum wanted a dog so went to the local RSPCA kennels and fell in love with a collie, he was 12 months old, He had been in a local kennels ( not RSPCA adoption centre) for 9 months, No advertising or anything, just left in the kennels, he must of been really cute and friendly at 3 months old. Why did they not even try to get him a home ???? A puppy...instead they kept him locked up in kennels for 9 months and then wondered why he was snapping at people and not very happy,
Mum got him, after having a very long waited home check and has spent something in the region of £1500 on him trying to get him happy and sorted. She is also and animal healer so has tried to help him this way, He will never be trusted with strangers as has attacked poeple. Very sad for a 'Charity'

" The British give more to animal charities than to charities for the disabled......Now that is messed up!"

Personally I think the fact that Britain, a self proclaimed nation of animal lovers, needs so many animal charities is more 'messed up'!

I support the Dogs Trust, as they never put a healthy dog to sleep. The RSPCA are an absolute waste of time imho.

I support the Dogs Trust too...have to say I've contacted the RSPCA a couple of times to report an animal and they haven't wanted to know!

I have never found the RSPCA to be very helpful. When we were looking to rehome a dog I contacted them, was promised a visit which never happened. Went to the Dogs Trust instead, passed the home visit and now have 2 happy healthy dogs

Have contacted RSPCA a number of times for various reasons ( one being escaped ferrets lol) and they have been hard to get hold of and uninterested.

Have had very similar experiences with the re rehoming years ago, as someone that can take on problem dogs I was just dismiised as I work, they would not even talk or come and see my facilities, yet on most of the cages it said unsitable for something that ruled out most people adopting!!!! I go to breed rescue now and take on dogs no one else wants.

As for calling them out forget it, after a considerable wait they just dont respond. In a recent case I phone 3 times to a sheep in distress, it had a lung condition (owned by English Nature!!!) You could hear it rasping for breath 1/2 a mile away. I called them at 8pm Nothing 9pm whats the problem again so I put the phone to the sheep and said do I really need to explain!!! Nothing and 10pm well the only person available wouldn't be able to help!!!!!
I called a vet who said they could only come to put it to sleep if the RSPCA certified it "theres a hole in my bucket dear liza"

Eventually a local farm vet came out and he turned out to be the owners vet (the owner whos only contact is a answephone) So a half past midnight it was finally PTS after 4 hours plus of suffering loudly, receive thanks from anyone? Did I F***. Should have cut out all the idiots and got the knacker man out but he would probably have been restrained too thanks RSPCA.

DONATE ? FORGET IT

the RSPCA anoy me anyway...the man opposite got rid of his puppies when they were only 4 and a half weeks old becasue he wanted the money to go on holiday with! we called the RSPCA during that week when 2 had already gone to their new homes and they said that it was ok for them to go at that age, we had already called them a few weeks before becasue he kept letting his dog lose and it kept getting stuck in peoples gardens...one morning it was away from its puppies for 3 hours and again the RSPCA said it was fine :O where my pony was from 2 horses that year had already died from mal-nutrition and RSPCA said he was a trustworthy person even if his horses were living in a field full of ragwort! Also watched a program on tv and one of the inspectors chased a semi-wild pony round a common for several hours trying to catch it - chasing after a semi-wild pony will just make it worse! eventually they called a horse wisperer who caught it 3 days later. also the whole 'rather put an animal down that give it to a good home that doesnt tick all the boxes' even if most of them were ticked is stupid! because our back garden isnt very big they wont let us have a dog of any size even if there is several hundred acres of common just at the end of the road and we have had dogs in the past so its not as if it would just be left to its own devices becasue we got bored! my mum was told by the KC that it is better to let a dog go to a good home with little or no garden where they were willing to walk it regularly than give it to a person with a huge garden and did not bother to walk it. our local vet wasnt even alowed to re-home a cat from the RSPCA!

Lots of animal charities get on my nerves. I have been told by one I was not suitable to adopt a cat as I had no garden, when I had moved to another city, another charity wouldn't give me a cat as I did have a garden!!!! Both times I would have been happy to take on a cat that was either old or had medical problems and so hard to place. Finally I bought 2 pedigree kittens where the breeder was delighted to find such a nice home. My local pet shop owner always tells me she wants to be reincarnated as my next cat

The types of attuitues these charities have encourage indescriminate breeding as someone that wants a pup or kitten and gets turned down on silly grounds will head to the nearest breeder which may be a puppy farm if they are inexperienced. The charity could do so much good by educating such people and giving an animal a real life outside a cage - but they don't seem to care
