Fridge the ex racer is finally learning that standing still is not a crime, we have conquered poles, canter leads, trotting without looking like a camel and all sorts of things but the standing still has been a challenge of the "I'm going to leap out of the starting stall if I stay here much longer" kind.. Bless. So here he is in all his stillness! Completely indulgent pointless post, but there you go..

No idea at all, he just does! I fear I have bored him into submission. Joking aside he raced until 9 years, has been with me straight out of training for 2 and a half. Is now 12 so I just think he's getting his head round being a more relaxed kind of horse.

Wow! I'm blown away by his mega stillness! :D
Well done to you both, it's the "little" victories that make for the biggest sense of achievement so not a pointless post at all, it's good to be proud of your horses achievements :)

Ha Ha, a trainer once told me that I do not train my horses, I just bore them into submission. I don't think he meant it as a compliment, but I did take it as one!

Well done with your patient work that has obviously left your horse feeling confident. :-)

That's brilliant, we must have frequented to the same school of equitation!

Not pointless at all. I've been there and after one particularly scary take off when I was only half on which left me bouncing across horses backside I decided enough was enough. His owner didn't seem to comprehend that horses could be trained to stand still when mounted and to wait until asked to walk on. Her attitude was he was an ex racer so you just accepted that was how he was. grrrrr!
So I waited until she was away and got it sorted pretty quickly. Result = a horse who would stand quietly for mounting and wait until he was asked to move .. I think teaching horses to stand quietly until asked to move is much underrated from what I've seen.

That sounds scary, to be fair he used to just walk off while I was half on with no acrobatics, annoying but not dangerous. But now stands sweetly. He would only stand still when we got back home and I was about to get off but will now stand in random places while out and about, which previously was where he would kick off!
