Has now closed it's doors. It was located in Illinois and it was called "Cavel Industries" Horses were shipped from all over the country here and slaughtered. The meat was packaged and shipped overseas for human consumtion. I saw alot of footage from inside Cavel and alot of is was horrific. Let's just say it was not a very humane process. I am glad it's closed, but wonder what will happen to all of the horses here now that were intended for this fate. Alot of people think they will be shipped to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered instead. This is not a great option as one of the most inhumane parts of the journey for these condemned horses was the greusome and cruel transport practices.

I have always voiced that I am not agianst people eating horses. It is no different to me than eating beef. I am against cruel treatment and inhumane slaughter. I am also against WHY some of these otherwise healthy animals wind up there. It is most often irresponsible owners.

Ah well....just wanted to post that Cavel has at last shut it's doors

Well when this Bill was introduced to America, I felt it was a very sad day for horse welfare

I fear you are right - horses will just be shipped up here, giving them an even more arduous journey and with the same fate at the end of it. How unfortunate for them.

There's a lot to be said for a good slaughterhouse which puts horses down humanely...I have no issue with their bodies being used afterwards but think we owe it to them to treat them with respect up to the end.
Perhaps those who breed horses for sale should ask themselves if there's really a market?

I think its the worst thing that couldve happened to the American horse population. I subscribe to 'The Horse' mag (American) and the reports on horses being abandoned to their fate is pretty sad. Would it not have been better to have stricter laws on transport distances and maybe building more slaughter plants to reduce the distances and the congestion at the plants? All it has done is increase the suffering for all those that are now slaughtered in Mexico (where often the humane aspect is completely missing) and for BillyJoes pony whos been 'set free' to roam the ' motorways, shopping malls and peoples back gardens

. Well done to the animalists

letting your pony loose when no longer wanted????? eh?? thats definately not the case here, i didnt realise there was loads of unwanted ones in america and italy?? shame, as horse in the uk are sold for alot of money- close ALL slaughter houses for ALL animals(vegatarian here) . its awful to think that a 'lifelong pal' could end up on someones plate-sickening

I am not sure what impression you have, but I have lived in the US for 33 years and NEVER have I seen a horse be "let loose" to run free

That was said as an example as to what people with the intended "meat" horses would do now. It does not happen

There are just as many neglect/unwanted horse cases there as there are here I suspect when you compare numbers to horses/population

Horses cost more there becuase there is less land and I assume horse keeping is far more expensive which drives the market price way up. I happen to know many horses in the UK wind up going for meat though and are still neglected so that part of the post is not factual.

quite sad really.

i suppose they will endure a very long journey now before being dispatched??

I must agree that although I would not eat horsemeat, I have no problem with the meat market as such, but, like you I worry about the conditions they are travelled under and the lack of kindness and respect at the end.

What a shame, America is such a huge country there really should have been at least one well run facility in each state. Some times these things are just not thought through

I think the problem here is the stigma involved. Horse meat is not comsumed here by humans so it is all but considered taboo. They (animal rights groups etc) are always trying hard to have these places shut down.
Some of the most strict animal protection laws are in place in this country and often these very laws are used to close the doors of these places

I think a horse slaughter house could be kept more humane if the meat was eaten here (prob never will happen)
If this were the case the USDA would be involved and inspect on a regular basis and the same level of cruelty would not happen

The meat I assume is not under the same US regulations as it is shipped overseas . That makes these facilities bound only to animal welfare laws and this is why I assume they all close down

A person mentioned earlier that it is awful to think of "someones beloved pet on a dinner plate" My thoughts on this are that it is the responsibility of the owner of that beloved pet to ensure this does not happen. If you have a lame, sick or problem horse have it euthanised instead of being cheap and lazy. The $250 you would get here for a "meat horse" is not worth what they endure in the end . If that is not an option for you , do your research and find it a forever retirement home or sanctuary (which I assume are in high demand with short supply everywhere in the world
