Well I have a bit of a trek to Teds field at the moment, so been riding him up there on the headcollar and 1 leadropes.

Now I was wearing knitted uggs and didnt want them muddy either lol!

What do you think of my position?
Can I do prelim 10 in this outfit?
Does my bum look big in this?
If I ride him to and from the field everyday, does it still count as "Ive ridden my horse today?" lol

Anyways my OH thought it looked funny so took a couple of pics. Ted wasnt bothered.

I have done this since I was a kid, was the norm on the yard I was on, every single horse was ridden up to the field :p maybe we were just all lazy bums! Me and Pickle can master cantering headcollar and leadrope bareback ;p mainly in straight lines though :p

loving the footwear and horsies bemused look hehe

I used to do it as a kid, never really been brave enough for a long while, just found some fun on ted. lol!

I do wonder though if he would be better in a bitless bridle, as he is easier to ride on a headcollar.

Bell of shame, coming your way :p

I used to always turn my horse out like that, but the yard banned it on H&S grounds :( we used to get on at the bottom (headcollars only, of course :p) and canter up the field to the gate, it was fantastic. I did it once last summer for the sheer hell of it ... so glad I did, it's a lovely memory of Dylan's last summer.

^^ This!

I used to work at a riding school and we all looked forward to the end of the day when we could ride the ponies back out to the fields. This usually involved us going for a canter and having a race across the field as we "needed to go and check the water trough!" ;)

I remember doing the same thing when I was younger, I also used catch my pony, volt on & gallup back to the gate, in a head collar, bareback & hatless.
I'd have trouble volting on a shetland now!
I also remember catching the riding school ponies, riding them to & from the yard, also bareback & often leading about 6 ponies.

When i was learning to ride at riding school, this was deemed a necessary learning curve, if you could master staying on a hairy fat pony bareback in a headcollar and leadrope, with no helmet and flapping wellies, it was deemed safe for you to go out on the next organised hack!

when i was at college a few years ago, when asked if we could ride bareback in the school for half an hour for a bit of fun, we were met with worried looks and 'We'll have to check with the health and safety officer first.....' needless to say, the non-horsey H & S officer put the kibosh on our half hour of fun.

Where i keep mine in livery now, its such a short walk to the fields (literally out the stable door and five steps to the field gate!) that its too much hassle to clamber onto my 16hh beast with a wither like a knife edge, but every now and then i have 5 mins in the school bimbling around bareback (with a helmet on these days!), reliving my early teenage years!

good for you, I go with the lazy option all the time, shame I breed mini's now though:eek:
I used to ride bareback on my retired pony to go and catch my horse as he was a real git to catch but I could grab him easy if I arrived on pony (stupid idiot didn't see me coming I think but he never learnt and I used this method for a few years)
Well done for the hat, I wasn't that smart!

I think every kid should get to ride bareback at some point, it would be very sad if RS's banned it on the grounds of H&S. The kids at my yard have bareback chase me charlie competitions! I'm not quite that brave, a sedate walk and trot around the school is about as far as I get. Being able to ride around bareback in a headcollar whenever I wanted was one of the things I looked forward to most about getting my own horse. :)

When I'm being lazy and can't be bothered to tack up I ride my small horse/ large pony in the school like that, headcollar and no saddle. Wouldn't dare canter her like that though as she continually bucks when I canter her bareback and wouldn't try it on road incase she spooks and I loose all control!
