the legal procedure to follow before land owner can removed horses?

Can anyone tell me the legal route to go down before a land owner can legally remove horses from one of his fields?
Am I right in thinking that a notice needs to be put up on the field gate before action can be taken and if so for how long does it need to be up for?
A friend of mine is having "issues" with unwanted horses, the tenancy on the field ran out last month and he can not get hold of the owners although know they have been going up there as horses keep appearing and disappearing although it is always made sure atleast one is in the field at a timee.
