Hey,
i have bought my mum some very nice Lemieux Reins for Christmas for our 17hh horse.
We have found with his current reigns the ends that we have behind our hands have been going under the saddle ( he has had literally about 30 saddle fittings since we ought them so im 99.99% sure its not that!) They are a FULL size and i find them to be shorter than normal reigns but i quiye like that since if he ever was to such he wouldn’t run away with me!! They are still long enough to have to shorten when doing long and low work! Should i be looking at the XL size to prevent the end going under the saddle or does this not make a difference! Please let me know what you think!! :)

Hi, I can't answer your question but just replying so it goes back up the list for someone else to see it. :)

I don't think this has ever happened to me & I'm having trouble picturing your problem. Do you mean getting looped round the saddle flap in front of your knee?

If he put his head down to eat grass, would you need to lean down to prevent any pressure on the bit?

My thinking is, if he trips and needs his neck to balance himself, it could be that length of rein he needs.

I think what you're describing is that you have no spare loop of rein after your hands.

Horse height doesn't really have as much impact as length of neck. My old 17.1hh needed very long reins made by a harness maker because he had a (very) long neck. (He wore 7'6" rugs so was long all over) My current 17hh is in normal reins because he has a much shorter neck.

I bought new Sabre plain leather reins for my share. Full Length - 54" ( 135cm)

They seem shorter than the same reins I used on my previous share, but they put an end to her constantly leaning on the reins. which she did with her previous rubbered ones. I wish the leather reins were longer but my wanting longer reins could be because I also rode Western.

Thank you! the buckle goes under the whole front of the saddle (monoflap saddle)

thank you for your reply! my question was quite vague sorry. What I mean is: there is a loop after my hands when i have him on a contact and i have found that this loop goes underneath the front of the saddle instead of falling down his neck - im wondering weather longer reins would contribute to the wight and so make it more likely to fall down his neck rather then slip under the saddle. Note that the reigns i have had this issue with are very light leather reigns and the reigns i just bought are stronger rubber reigns So perhaps the weight of them and the tension they have will prevent this from happening anyway? Thoughts?

I know what you mean, I have the same issue. The buckle end gets sucked in between the shoulder and the panel and you have to keep flicking it out.
