Is this being fed as a fly repellant (ie seeps through the pores like garlic does) ?

Or is the yeast in it good for improving the skin condition of itchy skinned horses? I have seen that some people feed brewer's yeast instead.

I used marmite, on bread or dissolved in water, and fed it to my pony that had really itchy skin when she molted it worked wonders.

A revelation! Have never heard of Marmite being fed to horses before. I have obviously led a very sheltered life!!

I feed Marmite to my itchy native, he doesn't have sweet itch or anything but just loves rubbing himself on anything and everything. The Marmite helps a lot. He has it on half a slice of bread if he doesn't need any feed, if I'm feeding him I use Brewer's Yeast instead as it works out a little cheaper.

Never tried using it for flies/itchy horses!

(Would you believe they also do Marmite Cereal bars on the shelves with breakfast/cereal bars and the like!!!.....)

And marmite cheese which is yummy!! also Marmite crisps, rice cakes, nuts etc, etc!!

I HATE marmite but love Marmite flavoured stuff :p

Marmite works wonder when fed to horses with sweet itch, I was told about it by a very old welsh cob producer at hickstead a few years ago as one of the ponies I worked with at the time had the worse case of sweet itch a lot of folk had ever seen and we where at our wits end with what to do for her, after the lovely gentleman told us about marmite we gave it a go and started to see an improvement in her pretty quickly, now we feed her it all year round so by the time summer comes she has a large amount in her system to combat the midges and you wouldn't believe the difference! I shall ask her owner if she has any before and after pics that she wouldn't mind me posting, it really is incrediable :)

A friend fed it to her horse and applied it to his sarcoids (the flat type) and it got rid of them.

Marmite and brewers yeast work because they contain vitamin b. In canada they use pure vit b 12 tablets for human fly repellent. Vit b makes skin taste bad so they don't like bitting you. tablets do work for people as i have tried them.

Not sure if its gastroguard your horse is having but my mates horse was recently on a course of that which it simply wouldn't touch, he ended up mixing it into a paste and putting it in a syringe and "worming" it into the horse direct.

This sounds like I need to give it a try. How much brewers yeast or marmite do people feed a day?

I am spreading one slice of bread with marmite - not too thick but thicker than I would want it if I was eating it. Fold over then cut in half and so he takes a square piece at a time and loves it - he really smacks his lips afterwards.

I do spray with fly repellant too so maybe not a fair test to see if it works as a fly repellant, and he prob hasn't been having the marmite long enough to tell if his coat is less itchy. But he is nice and shiny!

I use bute to give my oldie her bute in the summer. She is not interested in even the tiniest bucket feed if she can have grass but she regards a marmite & bute sarnie as a treat!
