I do apologise for starting a new thread about this as I know there are others but it's one of those things that you have to ask for yourself rather than read other people if you know what I mean.

Long story short, I'm thinking next year I'd like to get my next horse straight out of racing, I know everyone says just call up trainers etc, but is that really the best way? I'm not looking to spend much at all, and i'm always gonna have TBs so I think this'll be a nice way of getting my next horse. So what is the best way of contacting trainers, and more improtantly do they mind? Do I just get my name out there? or which are the bext sales to go to, I soound like such a numpty I know.

I'm in the Essex area, if anyone has any ideas!!??

Muchos appreciated, and I will put up an update post of my beautiful mare soon, she has come on leaps and bound in 6 weeks and is going to be a superstar :-D

Hi,

I think joining the ex racers forum would be a good idea. There are lots of memberS who have contacts with trainers and people are often posting about horses that have just come out of training in need of a home. A good friend of mine got a lovely 6 yr old grey flat racer for free after replying to a post. He's in good nick and she intends to event him next year.

Now is the time to be doing it as it's the end of the season and the slow ones will be getting moved on. If you know what you're looking for be worth looking at the Dec sales at Tatts (have some HIT tagged along in there.) Other than that call the trainers. If you want a list of approachable trainers give me a PM and I'll put you in the right direction. I hear of a lot and Newmarket isn't far from you being in Essex.

I got one in September. The race yard had a different horse for sale on horsemart or something and when I enquired, they sent me the details and pictures of about 5 others too! The one I asked about was not the one I came home with!

Mine will be 2.5yrs end of this month and is a treasure. Starting ground work in the Spring with him once he's turned 3 so he's had chance to mature and grow up (he's shot from 15.3hh to 16.1hh in two months). I paid £500 for him and he's in perfect health, good feet legs, lovely temperament and as docile as a seaside donkey, bizarrely!!! Sure he won't be when he's back in work though and he is quite cheeky.

I was at a trainers in Lambourn last week collecting two youngsters who had been there for breaking.

We had a six horse lorry & it was as much as I could do to stop the trainer sending me home with 4 more - He said he literally couldn't give them away..... So as has already been said, now is the time to find one. I would look through The Directory of The Turf, find the closest trainers to you & give them a call - they can only say no.

Tackytoe, I was going to go and see a horse in Lambourn a few months ago, I didn't end up going but did see there were afew racing yards round there, so maybe i'll give a few of them a call.

The grey in my siggie, I got out of the Ascot sales catalogue. Some of the horses in the programme had phone numbers by their listing so if you wanted, you could go the weekend before the sale to the trainers yard and look at them. That what I did with my grey, I hacked her out up the gallops (with the other race horses lol!) and Imade an offer there and then.. I had to pay to have her taken out of the sale but it was worth it for having the chance to try her properly :)

Why dont you get hold of Darley retraining of racehorses, website on internet, they will match you to the right horse for you depending on your experience and what you have to offer as far as the keeping of the horse, you have it for 3 months and if you like it you pay £100 if you dont you give it back, at least it has had basic schooling, any injuries it has they know about and would tell you also any quirks it might have, better than taking on something that has come straight off the track and you have no idea whats it been up to apart from racing, trainers also wont give you the full run down of the animals history. Darley horses are also very very well bred.

Aces_High : Sire - Needlewood Blade, Dam - Harriet (IRE), Damsire: Grand Lodge, Sire of Sire; Pivotal.

He wasn't fast enough soon enough. The trainer thinks he would have made it but the owner wanted to win now now now so new home he found. And luck lucky me!! I got him from Leicester and if they had any others in future that I liked, I'd buy of them again. Really nice people.

Was also going to suggest darley - seems very nice from the site, def considering getting a horse from them myself. All of them look lovely & they're put out in the fields for a few months when they arrive which I think is nice.

May not be your kind of thing - if you want to do it right from the beginning yourself, do go to the trainers.

Whoopit - :O beaaaautifulll xxx

Go to Ascot Sales - you get the catalogue about 2 weeks in advance of the sale - which means you can call the Trainer / owner in advance. On the day - the handlers are very candid about their charges - especially if you tell them what you want the horse for - ie. happy hacker, rather than Champion Hurdler......
I have bought 3 horses now (to continue racing.....but all have been 100% in all ways, traffic, clipping, loading, hacking our, hunting, sound etc. etc.) The most expensive was £2.5K and the cheapest £1,200. Have not won too many races for me to date (hopefully this years June purchase will.....) but the failed racers have gone on to other jobs - everyone is happy!!

I put in an application to Darley months and months ago, I have TB experience and I'm not looking for a horse that's gonna take me round Badminton, but herd nothing, especially as I agree there are some effing lovely looking ones on the web, worth getting in contact again maybe?

I know there are some people on here who have got from there, I'd be interested to hear from them!?

like everything in life you have to keep pestering them as they are busy so give them a call and remind them about your application.
