The modern version of a hunting whip

Glad it is not just me then ! and they are £90 a go !

A hunting whip has multiple uses, gates, catch and hold a hound or horse, stops hounds getting around feet of unsteady horses etc etc. The next thing we will see is a hunter with bling on his bridle.

My hunting whip has come out hacking and been used on a dog that likes to jump out of it's garden and chase me up the road.

I totally agree a young horse should be accustomed to the thong around his legs.
 
Weeeelll, I can see the point. I have just recently been taking a normal riding whip out hunting as I've needed to give the horse a whack or two to get him going through the mud before fences. The hunting whip wasn't much good for that. But it means I haven't got the useful handle for doing gates.

But boy does that hybrid whip look ugly!
 
I believe that when Prince Charles was a keen hunter he carried a whip exactly the same,specially made for him.Good idea really:)

I also carry my hunting whip out hacking, not just to use for gates, but also to occasionally fend off badly behaved mutts whose owners have no control over them :rolleyes: A good turn of the thong often removes errant dogs who will not respond to recall............

That one is much more attractive than the 'modern' version, which seems to have a 'join' in the middle of it. The David Thorne version is uniform from top to end. For hacking out I could see it being useful on bridleways and more balanced in the hand for people not used to carrying the full monty or wanting a thong.
 
Oh said he likes the DT one but not the newer one as the bottom of it looks quite thin...

He says he would quite like the DT one as you havent got the thong to get in the way if your taking an inexperienced racehorse hunting to qualify it....

He wouldnt use it off the hunt field though..... He could see why people would for gates :)
 
I can actually see a market for them for kids - my 9 yr old son has a proper hunting whip but uses it more for hound excersise, as finds it too much to hold out 'proper' hunting...

Or for 'occasional' members of the field, that want to look the part, but wouldn't have the confidence to use a proper hunting whip...

I can kinda see the point in them, but when the idea might be for young horses I'd rather use a crop until such time as it's not really needed, then switch to a proper hunt whip with lash.

Plus, it's only £45 less than one of their traditional hunt whips.... save your money up a bit longer and get a traditional one IMO.
