Hi All,
Am posting this for some advise for a friend who owns a very gobby/rude 17hh warmblood mare. Have done some reading and see that these are used for getting some respect back, but being rather expensive before she buys wondering if anyone has tried them before?
The mare in questions is 98% of the time a lovely horse, she is lovely to ride, can just be rude and un-mannered to handle from the ground.
Last night we spent 15 minutes trying to load her, with her rearing up and trying to run off, once in she was fine travelled lovely, she was just being gobby. She also trys to drag you off when leading/washing/ or picking up her feet.
Any other ideas would be also welcomed!

Yes I'd definitely recommend a Dually halter. I'm now on my second badly mannered horse and I wouldn't be without it. It doesn't come into action unless you need it to and can be used as a normal headcollar. Much prefer it to rope halters.

I haven't used one myself but have witness the transformation of my YO's previously unloadable dressage horse into a virtually perfect loader with the use of a Dually halter. My YO now can't speak highly enough of her Dually so I'm sure she'd recommend it to your friend.

Thank you for the comments.
Absolute Diva- Can I ask in which way your horses are ill mannered, and also how the dually works to prevent them being rude?

Have never had a really bad mannered horse, but just felt so sorry for her last night being dragged around by her beastie, who looked like she was effortlesly dragging her across the yard and rearing at the trailor!

Daisy was my first horse. She would drag anyone that tried to lead her as she ran off, she really did not like being led. She's now been retired and I ended up with another rude horse as my RI knew that it wasn't something that would bother me.

Lil is generally lovely but a bit of a tart. Every now and then she'll hear a loud noise or see one of her friends running around in the field and try to tart off to join them. With a dually I can just give her a quick "Oi" and she remembers that she has to walk nicely and respectfully. She's now pretty angelic as she knows that rude behaviour is not tolerated.

I have a dually for my bossy Cob. It's brilliant! I would definately recommend it- especially for getting manners when leading. I haven't yet had much success with loading but my mare is particularly stubborn. My friend bought one for her Dales pony, who was difficult to load, and now he goes in with no trouble.

Definatley! Mine was expensive - but you can sometimes get them off Ebay for cheaper.
They last an age as they are built very very well. (even if you have a tank stretching it everyday!)

I used mine to get my girl loading more confidently - it works by putting pressure (not pain) - onto their nose so they get a strong signal of when they are doing something wrong - then when they come forward (or do the right thing) that pressure is INSTANTLY rewarded - so a much quicker learning process!

I wish you well, my girl wasnot much of a demon to being with (knocks on wood and throws salt over shoulder ect!) so i dont have much 'extreme' experience.

However another girl (not a small slight weedy one) on my yard had a shovey cob she couldnt lead around in straight lines for him darting about from green patch to green patch - she borrowed mine for 10mins - and he was leading around like a show pony!

Watch some you tube vids for some ideas where and when they can be used - im not saying they are the golden answer, but a good tool in the right hands!
