Hi all,

Im a final year student doing an equine degree, and I have been set a debating assignment on the morals of Euthanasia.

I know it is a sensitive topic for all, but I would greatly appreciate anyone taking the time to fill out my 10 question survey; simply click on the link below.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2SQBSGD

I would like to point out, that questions have been phrased in order to help me gather the information I require and by no means are meant to offend or cause upset.

Many thanks,

Saskia.

Kind of covering all bases recently discussed on here in one go! I'm sure you will find many many takers on here to fill in your survey.

If you use the search function, you will also find a great deal of in depth discussion on the topic, and even I think, some academic references in there.

I stopped at the question asking if euthanasia is harder to do if the horse is considered a pet. I can't answer it, as my horse isn't an athlete (in that, my living isn't dependent on his athletic performance, however I like him to be as athletic as possible, he is not a "professional athlete") and I have no experience of that situation, so cannot make a judgement. Sorry.

I found the same as Chestnut_Cob, except my horses are both pets and athletes (I showjump) so I couldn't answer it. I found several of your questions leading (in that they suggest the outcome you want in the question itself), and I'd be surprised if Q.6 was allowed by your university rules and regulations. So be aware that you are not getting a representative sample because people like me and C_C cannot answer because of the distinction you imply.

Maybe you would be better with a simpler survey with less questions with a comment box at the end?

Done, however, i have first hand experience of euthanasia, but have chosen a different method over that of my boy i had PTS recently, but there isn't anywhere for me to comment as to why,

I also think the two are not mutually exclusive... as Mithras says, a horse can be both a pet AND and athlete. I hope this will be the situation with mine. He isn't just a pet like the dog was, he does work and do a job. He schools, SJ, DR, does a bit of hunting, done some UA eventing and I hope will do some BE. So technically I guess that is where he starts getting towards the category of "athlete", however he will first and foremost still be a pet and that is because I do not depend on his performance to earn a living (that is how I would define it). I want him to be an athlete; I want him to be fit, well schooled, supple and responsive, but that doesn't mean he isn't also my pet.

I also disliked the question about whether women find it more difficult to PTS than men. I don't think that has anything to do with morals. My Dad is absolutely devastated that he has just had to have his dog PTS; I am upset but certainly didn't struggle with helping him come to the decision, because it was the right time. There is no real scope for that sort of answer in your question.

Yes but don't forget there are those who consider their horses athletes that do a job to earn their keep and the minute they can't they get pts as it's business......
Not trying to cause a rucuss but I have known a few like this.

I have also know a few who have them as athletes but they are a beloved pet aswell but still if they needed pts then they would be for the horse not because they can't do their job

I would agree with Mithras and CC with regards to horses being both athletes and pets. I also think question 8 is extremely subjective and doesn't demand anywhere near enough depth as the question deserves.

Sorry I don't think the questions seem very logical. Is your horse a pet or an athlete? think this Q is a bit odd, I think you mean 'is it a pet or a working animal'.

Ditto, both mine were PTS by injection but that's not the method I selected on the questionnaire.

exactly, one does not exclude the other. I class mine as pets but even if I didn't, reasons for PTS would be the same. hopefully this will give the OP plenty to discuss in her project as well as answering critique of her questions from her tutors :)

Done...and actually commented in the 'other' box and stated my horse is both and 'pet' and an 'athlete' im my humble opinion and don't make any 'separation' of this at all as other have already said.

Have answered it the best i can in relation to the way the questions are worded..!!

I'm sorry, I don't think this is a particularly well thought through survey. Being a pet and an athlete are not mutually exclusive, for a start. Q6 needs rethinking, especially, imo.
