The most effective spurs that are BE/BD legal?

Hahaha, I had a lovely pair of Jeffries ones, but under this year's rules they are too long :(. I think they are actually more "effective" than ones with smooth rowels. I don't know if they have brought out a newly legal pair?

The other thing that is important is that the spurs are not too big for you, that was the nice thing about the Jeffries ones, they have a shortened arm, and with good leather straps you can get them really tight on your foot and then they don't slide around.

I have an awesome pair - they never work very well doing dressage but they are brilliant for xc and sjing. They are maximum length and seem quite sharp. They are long prince of wales ones. I think mine are just BE legal.

Ok -will look at the Prince of Wales..
Pachama- feel free to come and ride this horse without spurs, no-one's suceeded in being able to make him even trot yet!!;) But you are more than welcome to come and have a go!:)

:D :D lol
sorry i'm no help this just made me laugh :D i have a similar prob with my horse and am always frowned upon "you have a whip and spurs"

i found riding mine at home with out my spurs (really hard work i know) but really using my schooling whip to back up my leg consistantly and being really strict about him being in front of it all the time, saving my spurs for comps when extra effort from him was needed espec in BE when i can't have my whip ;)

*startled face* (not got the hang of smilies- Oh, hang on, found them...)
Really don't know what to say to that........

Presumably you don't understand the distinction between squared off ('sharp') spurs and rounded off ones then. The OP isn't talking about actual spurs with points! ;) She means not impuls, not bobble ended, not rowels, just squared off spurs!

SB I SJ/XC in these (the 30mm version): http://www.aivly.co.uk/product_53034.htm

ETA though actually, as 35mm is allowed, it is possible mine are: http://www.rbequestrian.co.uk/298297/products/Sprenger_Ultra_Fit_Spurs_25mm_35mm_.aspx

I know I bought the longest allowed at the time! I use the same thing but with rounded ends for dressage.

Haha, Yes, precisely S_C, that is just what I meant, Pachamama- as if BE or BD would seriously allow anyone to compete with razor sharp spurs:rolleyes:

Thank you for the links, I will order those...
Angelish- wish that would work but have pathetically useless short legs so that method doesnt quite seem to be making things happen this time!

LOL, no no, I'm sure you're more than able, but I did have a very amusing flashback to some of the riding school ponies I used to work with :p :p

As you know, I too suffer from the pathetically short legs on ridiculously too large for me horse syndrome. ;) I actually have 4 different pairs of spurs - short sharp, short rounded, long sharp and long rounded!

I, you made me LOL, maybe I should come and have a sit I am renowned for an electric seat having been carted off with the laziest of horses, though I have short legs too ;);):D

At the moment spurs are measured differently for BE and FEI as a new rule has come in for FEI. It is possible that BE will come in line with the FEI so maybe think of getting spurs that are also FEI legal. Be very careful with the prince of wales spurs that are rather "chopped off" and sharp as the can mark horses very easily.

Old Vic - can you clarify the difference in the rules? Where do you need to measure from to be FEI compliant as I am sure BE will head that direction.

It used to be the branch of the spur that was measured. Now it is from the back of the boot to the end of the branch, so you lose a good 0.5cm. Got hauled up for it in Saumur and had to buy new spurs.

As Tiger's Eye says, for FEI you measure from the boot rather than just the shank which makes a big difference.

I'd also be wary using the Prince of Wales spurs on a lazy horse. If you have to use them a lot, they mark some horses really easily as they are quite sharp.
