The most horrific morning. Heartbroken

I made the decision this morning to have my elderly tb pts. She has suffered arthritis for a few years and gets lymphangitis. I already had decided to let her go before winter.
This morning her leg had ballooned up with lymphangitis. She wouldn't eat and was shaking. Rather than treat her I decided it was time to let her go. I spoke to vet at length saying I wanted the best possible scenario. I.e straight down and not thrashing about as I'd had a mare do years before after the sedation reacted.
Vet came out and we agreed no sedation just like most of my other horses as it's generally better that way. She injected the first injection of somulose in. I saw blood come back into syringe. I've had many horses pts over the years and generally they go down after the first.
By the 3rd and final one she was still standing. Then she started losing her balance and crashed through the stable partion. To cut a long story short she wouldn't die. She kept trying to stand up and kept crashing into the partition
Vet went and got a bottle of barbiturate. She was lying still enough by now to inject safely. Again I watched and blood came back so she'd got vein. A whole bottle of barbiturate went in. We thought then she had almost gone as she stopped breathing but reflexes in eyes. Then she woke up again, becoming alert. She tried putting a bottle of magnesium in her veins and at this put she went unconscious but not dying.

I have no words to describe the heartbreak. My beautiful horse in her last hours.

Eventually our farming neighbour came and shot her.

I thought I was doing the right thing and now I have to live with what my horse went through. 17 years of loving her and that was her final moments.

The vet was on phone to senior vet and she is not inexperienced herself. They both said it does happen. I've never seen a horse not die after all those drugs.
I don't know if something did go wrong or it was as she said.

And why did she have to go and get a bottle of barbiturate? That should have been drawn up in advance, as it's the barb that actually 'dispatches' them.

The somulose is only ever been used on any of my horses. She used a whole bottle.
I'm not a vet but that's all they've ever used.

I have no experience of anything like this (thankfully) but I am so, so, so sorry and am sure can mirror the feelings of the rest of the forum in being so sorry for you....it feels phenomenally inadequate but you have my sincerest condolences and big virtual hugs oxoxox

I'm so sorry to hear that. How were you to know that was going to happen? I bet nothing any of us could say would make you feel much better, but please try not to feel too bad-you are not to blame. Love from all of us, and again sorry you had to go through this :( x

So sorry. I've had this happen twice now and it is horrific. I am so sorry. Don't beat yourself up about it any more than you have to. You did the best you could with the professional advice you had. At least she is at peace now.

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry! How awful for you and your mare. When my mare was put to sleep she was sedated and then had somulose. She crashed down and kicked for a few seconds and I thought that was bad enough. I cannot begin to imagine what you must be going through. My heart goes out to you xx

Somulose is actually a barbiturate combined with a cardiotoxic substance the mechanism is that the barbiturate sedates and the cardiotoxic substance stops the heart.

Dont beat yourself up as others have said you took professional advice. Occasionally horses do refuse to die when Somulose is used. The vet will also be pretty upset as well as they do not deliberately want to induce a bad end either. When My oldie was PTS we did sedate him as we knew he responded well to sedation (needed it to do his teeth properly) and it went as planned. So sorry it didn't today for your mare.

Don't beat yourself up. It's unlikely the mare knew much about it. Physically "alert", maybe, but unlikely that her conscious, reasoning self was still awake. It happened to us on the yard just last week. Elderly mare and in the end her heart was just too weak to pump the chemicals around. It took ages, although she did go in the end :( It's an awful thing to witness. We usually use the bullet but this owner didn't want to do that ... This owner also didn't turn up for the end, so I ended up lying and saying everything had "gone as could be expected" because I didn't have the heart to tell her how it really was.

Huge sympathies and big hugs xx

I have had similar happen and my heart goes out to you as I know how traumatic and shocking it is. It will take time for you to recover. Big hug from me and try not to feel guilty - it wasn't your fault. X

I am really sorry-very hard on you and the vet I'm sure. I actually had it happen with a dog of mine, took four times the amount it should have done. But neither my dog and I suspect your mare knew much of what was going on which I know is no consolation right now.

Sincere heartfelt sorrow for you at this time........very painful memories for you just now but you will remember the good times given time.
Big hugs >>>>>>and in my thoughts

I'm so sorry. I don't suppose for a minute that she was aware of what was going on. Once their circulation collapses drugs don't get taken to the relevant part of the body, I had one PTS by injection and it was the same, apparently as she had gone into shock and her circulation had gone.

The vet wouldn't have had back up as a lot of vets now do not have the license for a humane killer, round here only the older vets still use it.

Thank heavens for your farmer neighbour.

At least one vet from my wilts and my somerset practice have a licence and they aren't that old and I would request them under strong terms because of that.
