Just wondering what everybody thinks is the most popular type of horse/pony available? And the type which sells for a premium because it's hard to get hold of. Are safe, sane ponies the most coveted for kids? Or are lively, forward going horses (as long as not nutty) most popular? What height is the easiest to sell?

This is obviously discounting the 'specialist' horses that go for loads anyway like established showjumpers, eventers and dressage horses.

ive seen some really expensive 'safe' cobs with no experience but such an ameniable nature go for loads. 10 years ago i bought that very type of pony and hardly paid anything because he was termed lazy..now it seems you can sell them for £4-5000 because theyre 'rare'!

Id say for kids its definately the safe sane ones the parents want for them. I found it very difficult to sell the only buzzy pony I had - the parents would call up saying they wanted something lively as their child was very competent, they turn up and the child is a nervous useless wreck......!! I think BSJA pony wise then the buzzy ones are more in demand but for average pony club nativey types suit more. Height-wise, hmmmmm.... really depends doesnt it? With regard to forward going ponies Id say they're best bigger (14.2hh) as obviously its hard to find a decent TINY rider for a 12.2hh nutter!

ive found the prices of
coloured cobs.and
kids ponies
are really high for what you get loads of the time
was going to say kids dressage/ja ponies but they are specialist!
there always seems to be some kind of craze going on-although the WB phase seems to be here to stay!

Generally whatever I want is what everyone else wants at that precise moment, and gets there before I do!

Seriously though, quality (and not so quality!) show cobs, particularly coloured ones, are going like hot cakes.

genuine first ridden ponies are always good sellers.

I am always being asked if I know of any..............

Middleweight 15.2/16h, 7 to 11 year olds to do a bit of everything. You know the sort of thing, perfect Riding Club allrounder. Good in all respects, no ifs or buts, preferably a gelding and all for ...................

less than £2,500!

safe cob and irish types definately IMO.

i always thought safe ploddy cobs were not worth that much in comparison to finer types etc but seems i am very wrong. i know several people with very 'average' (no where near show quality) plodding cobs that paid around £5k for them !!! (altho some of these people have more money than sense)

if someone gave me 5k to spend on a horse id atleast want a a potential show cob!

i remember a safe sensible but fun cob being bought at an old RS i was at for 2k which i think is far more reasonable!

Have you tried getting a good well bred gypsy cob, particular a mare????

I was offered a nice mare with good bloodlines (but not exceptional) 5 year old mare, had not been ridden for 18 months and about to foal so needing a lot of work for £5,000 and if I wanted the foal she would have been £7,500. She later went to the US for £8,000 scanned in foal.

I ended up buying Chancer - and he was up for £2,250 as a yearling!

I see a lot of scrubby gypsy cob going for £4,000 plus.

Mind you the top stallions can go for £100,000.
