People are always surprised by how strong Stella is for her size--not least me! Over here, Boston Terriers are making their mark at weight pull competitions --one of the few small breeds to do so.

So, what would you say is the most unexpected quality about your chosen breed?

I always knew greyhounds/lurchers had a reputation for being gentle, lazy and laid back but mine have all had such a fantastic sense of fun. They're skittish and silly and have such funny little quirks that they make me smile every day.

I knew what to expect with an English Springer but his howling when i sing took me by suprise! Also he 'smiles' occasionally at people when they come in, love to know why he does that.

I expected Beagles to be over excited and full of energy, and knew they were lots to handle and good temperament! what i didn't expect was my Beagles total adoration, separation anxiety and variety of strange habits (refusing to come in the house if soeone is standing by the door, can't go to the toilet if someone is looking, obsession with socks, loves hding beneath the duvet, Rando leaping in the air leaping at invisible air particles, dancing in circles, etc, etc, etc!!) Makes him more lovable though and gives him bags of character though I am sure he is slightly ADHD!!!

Not suprising to me...but to others....that my Akita is well mannered, fab natured and great with other dogs...even though they have a big bad reputation

That's what I was driving at with my original question--traits that are surprising to others.

I've only met two Akitas and both were ridiculously outgoing and waggy--nothing like what I was expecting.

well, i've got 4 j.r.t.s, and they're all totally soppy and very goodnatured, not at all snappy or nasty. people are very surprised at how sweet they are. the dog is very talkative, and two of his daughters (i've kept one, friend has the other) have the same trait. he'll come and sit up in front of me and squawk and moan to get my attention. we have full "conversations" sometimes!

I was expecting a toller complete with the toller scream, hyperactivity, a bit neurotic, etc. The breeder said she'd understand if I returned him after a few weeks!

As he's still a puppy he's still very playful, but no scream as of yet, and after owning gun and pastoral dogs previously he's very trainable and not as hyper as I thought he'd be!

The Wolfhound! Too many plus points to note. I did know most of the traits as researched the breed well but the absolute intelligence and brilliance of these dogs if ( as with all animals) allowed to be the dogs they can be, and do the job or an approx. one that they were bred to do.

People always seem to be suprised at how playful and full of character my Whippets are....it's as if they expect them to be depressed, shivery subserviant little things

And then on the other hand, people are amazed just how much sleep my whippies and previous sighthounds pack into a day

My JRT is v friendly (runs up to strangers with her bum wiggling wanting a stroke) and doesn't bark much, but the most surprising thing about her is her colour - she is yellow like a lab.
