My horse came in from the field almost 4 weeks ago with a fetlock the size of a balloon, so as this wasn't the first injury my horse has had with his legs, I phoned my vet and she came out to see him.

Had a prod around, he wasn't sore in any area of his hind leg, both around the hock and fetlock. Leg was hot, but only slightly.

Initial trot up, perfectly sound, horse happy to trot on even and uneven ground without even a slight favouring of the leg. Flexion tests made him only go slightly, slightly off on that leg, but nothing a horse of 18 wouldn't do when the joint was being extremely strained.

Prescribed bute and box rest for 2 weeks, with daily walkies for some grass and a nosey at this friends.

After around 10 days, swelling had noticeably gone down, no heat or lameness. Vet came back out, sound on initial trot up and sound as a pound with flexion tests.

This time prescribed 1 more week of box rest with daily rides out of his stable in walk with a bit of trot. The next day, took him on a hack through the fields and he loved it, very happy to walk and trot and was sound and not stiff.

2 days later, fetlock had ballooned again, no lameness/heat/soreness at all. Thought it was just his legs protesting at being in so long, so turned him out in a little paddock to have a hooli about. Leg gone down slightly but still puffy.

No clue what it is, vet coming back out Friday hopefully for x-rays.

Anybody had anything similar with their horse? Ideas welcome as I am completely at a loss for what to do as he is showing NO signs of injury at all other than a puffy fetlock.

I've had mine walk out of the stable one morning with a massive fetlock, turned him out into a little pen to keep moving and buted him, went down in about 2 week's but ever since when he is stabled overnight it swells. I now put stable bandages on if he is stabled and the swelling isnt there 95% of the time come morning.

If he were mine - I'd poultice the whole joint and have a good look at the poultice 24 hours later - really amazing how they can have a really tiny puncture wound that blows the leg right up.

Other things that make legs swell is early mudfever - wash whole leg well with Nizoral to kill any fungal infection.

Undecided- thanks for the reply :) I have had stable boots on my horse for about a week ish now and they did help the swelling go down slightly, but the swelling is still there.

Tnavas- that's my next course of action, trying everything I know to shift the swelling and see if there is anything that can be drawn out by a poultice.

It's frustrating as he is so well in himself, yet just has this one fat leg!
