The Name!

we had 4 horses at my old yard who came with the name Molly, all were changed! Flash is a stupid name, I think he was ironically named!

I used to look after a mare called Gloria! She was lovely.
One of my horses was called Hilly but we used to call her Hilary!

Bar Hammond had a horse called 'The Colt' and he was a 20 year old gelding, they hadn't got round to naming him!!

We had a "lovely to look at but would eat her grandmother" mare who came with the name Tempo but quickly became Temper.

I bought a lovely but incredibly plain school horse (Appaloosa, hideous colour, almost no mane and tail) with the very unlovely name of "Dolly". I couldn't bring myself to tell people her name so when I got her home and someone asked I just said her name was a secret. Next day everyone's talking about this horse called "Secret" . . . it took me awhile. My boss and I both loved the book "Showjumping Secret" as kids so that quickly became her ironic but endearing full name.

Some of the QH's, especially in America, have awful names. I knew one that evented called "Big Bone Lick" EWW! Even I would change that and I'm superstitious. The same people showed another horse named "Frog".

There was a jumper in my childhood called "Lonely Without a Plough" You can imagine what he looked like.

I LIKE people names for horses so long as they suit. The horse in my sig is called Neale and it completely suits him although it is always pronounced Neeeeale. He's named after the vet, a good friend of his breeder, who "created" Neale (by AI) and who died three days before he was born so it has a lot of meaning.
