mine happened during jumping a grid; Ellie took two fences on at once and landed on the pole, turned a somersault and came down on top of me. i say this was my worst, but i dont remember all that much as i blacked out for about 6-8 seconds! nasty mother then made me get back on and jump a cross pole with a broken hand!

the most painful fall i had was out hacking; i leaned over to open a gate from the saddle, and suddenly a bird flew out of the hedge. Ellie jumped sideways, and I came out the side door, hitting my head on a rock. she then stood on my arm - ouch! still, i got back on and went for my hack, and it was only when i got back i noticed my arm had gone completely black. iv still got lots of tissue damage now; my right biceps are very lumpy!!

Ok, I really am touching wood right now and probibly shouldn't say this but I have never realy had a really bad fall. The worst was sj when my mare saumersaulted on to me but miraculously both me and the horse walked away with minor injuries!

only had 2 falls but the worst out of them was in my lesson (clicked flatwork lol) we were cntering and the lunge whip got cracked and the horse went into gallop and bucked vertcical (i sat the first) then bucked again and i was unbalenced and fell off out the side door bashing my hip on the floor and knackering my back when i rolled awy from her!! x

My latest one is the worst I have had, was out hacking at work on a 4yo, there was a donkey coming the other way, my horse gave no warning went straight up and over crushing the top of my leg, resulting in operation, pin, horrible nasty scars and not being able to ride till at least March 2008!!!!

I was dragged along a school fence by a youngster I was riding. As soon as it turned away from the fence I bailed out as it was turning into a bolt and i didn't want to catch the end fence as well. Rolled off jumped up and thought I was ok then realised my arm and hand wouldn't work. My arm was degloved up to the elbow and I needed surgery and 62 stitches and staples. This was 1 1/2 years ago and I still have no feeling from the elbow down on my left arm.

When we were riding along the road minding our own business and a car hit us and he landed on top of me and then kicked me in the face as I got up

I have seen far too many nasties unfortunetly

though most were without serious injury.

One was in a SJ class, friend's mare lost both back shoes on course (was long derby course at about 1m20) but she wasn't aware of it. Came up to devils dyke and on taking off both the mare's back legs slipped backwards, result was crashed through first part of fence and friend went flying in air landing backwards with bottom pole of middle upright in the nape of her neck. She was knocked out for several minutes and even temporaily stopped breathing. She was then immobilised for several days in hospital till she was given the all clear. Thankfully in the end no serious harm done but it took a lot for her to enter the same class the following year.

Another was several years back in a BSJA collecting ring when the horse refused rider flew into ring and became impaled on the metal cup. Nasty was the word for that without question.

Just reread and realised its falls I have had not seen!

In which case got a couple of those as well. Firstly Dan clipped a wall filler and somersaulted, apparently I rolled out the way just in time.

When on 12hs once I had my stomach stood on when fell off in a JO when about 8 or 9. Another on 12h2s crashed through a spread when pony didn't pick up and my legs were rolled over twice by pony.

On 14h2s I knocked myself out XC schooling. Got from one end of field to other with absoltuley no clue how I got there.

Thankfully with those and all the others I have had I have SO FAR never broken a bone, just had lots of bruises!

I can't decide which was the worst out of these two. No1, was riding with others, another girl's pony spooked, she started screaming, my pony freaked, bucked, twisted mid air and threw me into a fence.
2nd, schooling in the field. had already prepared pony's food and left it in the other field by the stable, and left the gate open. Trotted up the hill, and across the top end, ponio bolted, I tried to pull him up, he bucked, dropped his shoulder and deposited me into a pile of bricks. True to form, bleeding and with broken ribs I still managed to untack him, wash him down and put him to bed before going inside to get patched up.

road..pony spooked at something....stood up, went over backwards onto me..

cracked pelvis, partial dislocation of hip, femur broken in 2 places, diclocated knee, cracked tibia and fibia and a totally smashed ankle which still has 4 pins and 2 plates in it! all on the right leg

hospital for 9 months and 18 months re-hab to learn to walk again....big ouch!

God, after reading all this it makes you wonder why on earth we do it!!! Perhaps we should all take up embroidery or something equally boring. At least it's safe!!!

Out hacking on a sh*tty pony with no brakes.....spooked I went one way and managed somehow to get my foot caught in the sturrip and was dragged bouncing along the side of the sh*tty pony...no harm just badly bruised(this happened when I was 12!)My other fall happened a couple of years ago out hacking when the horse lost it's footing and we went down at a gallop,it and I lay there stunned,it did everything not to roll on top of me......I had to yell to my friend to come back as she was ahead of me(and it was her other horse!) she asked if I was OK, if not due to being remote location we would have to call an air ambulance....I was more concerned for the horse.....once again lot's of lovely bruises, but nothing broken...Thank God!

I clicked XC as that was the scariest fall I've had - the jumps were 'homemade' at a local RS - they had big solid square wings about 5ft high each side. Horse treid to run out, i tried to make it jump, neither of us won and the horse ended up jumping the wing - catching it's back leg on the top and somersaulting over it throwing me clear (thank god!). Horse ripped it's leg open but I was ok.

Another nasty one was bareback - cantering around field pony tripped, i was flung over his head and I think I must have hung on to the reins when he tried to get back up, as he fell on me and put his knee through my clavicle! Ouch....

I totally agree with you Charmaine....we must be mad

I suppose my worst fall (and touch wood I haven't had many) was when i was 9. I was having a lesson at the local RS and I didn't want to canter (Pony was being naughty and I didn't feel I wanted to canter on it). The teacher insisted I must and cracked a lunge whip behind the pony who promptly took off flat out gallop, jumped an oil drum that was marking the corners of the arena and I fell off. Landed on my elbow and broke my shoulder

As an adult I think I have only had three falls. One we were cantering in a field and the horse in front of us somersaulted. I managed to jump it's back legs as it landed in front of us and then my daft horse took off and dropped it's shoulder. Dumping me in the grass. No injuries fortunately.

The second I was in the arena riding with no stirrups. We were doing circles at each end of the arena and as the horse approached me at the centre my horse (same one as before!) spooked sideways. I managed to stay on and was just congratulating myself on getting control of him when he took off flat out across the arena, swerving to both sides as he went. Of course with no stiruups I eventually started to lose my balance and he decided to fly at the wall
shocked.gif
The G*t then literally smashed me into the wall. I was really badly winded and concussed that time.

The third time was a hunter who loved to buck and kick the walls as he went into canter and thoroughly enjoyed it the more noise it made. This time he didn't make much noise so lashed out with another huge buck to try again but of course that time missed so went into a huge tantrum and catapulted me over his ears!
ooo.gif
Very embarrassing as I wet myself as I took off!

Reading some of these make mine sound pretty minor, but they did hurt!
1st one the riding school horse put in a really dirty stop jumping and I flew over her head and had an arguement with the wings and pole, in terrible pain I drove home (in 2nd gear as I couldn't change gear), when I arrived I had to beep the horn as I couldn't actually get out of the car, turned out I'd broken 2 ribs in my back and cracked my pelvis - nice!

2nd one was this year, was trying out a pony to buy and stupidly decided to pop him over a tiny jump and he jumped 4ft into the air, somehow I came down flat on my face and broke my nose and finger. I bled over the owners light coloured top as well - I was so mortified I just wanted to jump up and drive off!

its one thing discussing falls we've had that we can look back on and chuckle about now, but it muct be tragic to have one that caused you to lose your horse

Lots of ouchies in this thread! Worst injury was broken tib and fib from jumping last year. Most scary fall was galloping along when Chex fell down a rabbit hole, somersaulted and I went flying. Those few seconds before he managed to get up were the worst of my life. We were both unhurt luckily.

The last time i answered a post like this, which was about broken bones that were horsie related, two days later my horse fell and i went over her head breaking my arm so hope i havent tempted fate again!!!!!!!

The nastiest fall I ever had I escaped unharmed, however the horse slit himself open from wither, across his chest, to the top of his opposite leg. His flesh was hanging off like bits of steak and he had 2 bone chips in his shoulder, yet they still tried to sacve him. Took 2 vets 4 1/2 hours to stitch him up and they pts 2 weeks later.
Other bad falls;
Dislocated both my shoulders coming off a breaker at about 14, can't remember how bad it was as was unconcious for about 20 mins.
Broke 3 ribs and seriously sprained neck in a fall schooling over fences, again was knocked out so don't remember. Broke both my ankles a year apart, 1 a dog ran out and turned my horse over, the other horse smashed through the wing of a fence with me. Both falls were a bit pathetic, just unlucky.
Got airlifted with suspected broken back, didnt regain conciousness until I got to the hospital. Walked out that evening, I can only remember up until a stride before the fence, have a feeling the horse put both front feet in the ditch, horse broke its pelvis.

Now here is a post that I can reply to.

Mine was out with the bloodhounds. It happened on Januray 2nd 2003 and Iwas taking a friends daughter and her friend with me. The last thing my friend said was 'please look after her'!!!

We had laft and completed a couple of lines my horse was jumping like a stag but my friends daughter was having trouble with her pony so we got left behind. We eventua;;y caught up with the rest of the hunt and had just trotted down a very steep hill to a lovely tiger trap at the bottom. One of the whips wa shaving trouble getting his horse over it so I gave them a lead my horse cleared is lovely but his horse still wouldn't jump. It was near the end of the line and I could see everyone gathering in the distance by the dew pond. As I looked back I could see the whip still struggling to get his horse over. I was thne having a good gallop twards the rest of the hunt when my horse stumbled. My natural reaction was to try and pull him up but he fell I canme off and he then rolled on top of me. I felt fine but when I tried to get up I couldn't lift me head off the floor. I then started to get pins and needles in my hands and feet. I was taken to hospital by air ambulance where I was canned and xrayed. they found out that I had dislocated and fractured 2 vertebrae - c6 and c7 which are the bottom 2 in this picture
http://www.fotosearch.com/UNM155/u17188063/ (super man did c3 and c4)
Unfortunatly the hopital I was at didn't do the operation I needed so I had to endure an hours ambulance drive to another hospital where they fitted a halo brace
http://www.chaneco.co.uk/Products/orthotic_products/214.jpg (this isn't me!!)
I was also in traction for 4 days and at the most had 30 punds of weight hanging off the halo to allow the dislocated vertebrae to slip back in place.
I was in hospital for a week and had the halo on for 10 weeks. It should have been 12 but I got infections in the areas where the halo was drilled into my skull and the brace slipped so they removed it early. I the had a philadelphia collar on for 4 weeks http://www.abledata.com/product_images/images/06A0814.JPG (again not me) then a whiplash collar for 4 weeks. I have 4 scars 2 on my forehead and 2 in my hair, where the brace was attched. I have limited movement when looking to the right and will probably end up with arthritus in my neck as the 2 vertebrae have fussed, but altogether I came through pretty well seeing as what could have happened.
I was back riding again in May and rode the horse I fell off of once then decided to retire him as he was so stumbley after having so long off.
I now have a 3 year old that I have just backed. I must be bloomin mad!!!

I have had 3 bad ones, one showjumping, and two out hacking. The showjumping one was all my fault, I started riding too soon after having a baby and pushed myself too hard, at one jump the horse went very deep and vertical on the way up, that wasn't a problem. Vertical landing was a challenge though as I hadn't built up my stomach muscles I couldn't get back far enough, even with hailing a cab, so I plopped off and landed on the only rocky bit of ground in the paddock - twisted pelvis.

Two out hacking, one years ago in the days before hats were such a big deal, and those we had were pretty useless, i smacked my head on an overhanging bough whilst cantering along a track (should have ducked lower), fractured skull, I didin't know I had broken it at the time, when I came round I got back on the horse and rode back to the yard.
More recently, bronced off what became know as my rodeo pony, broken hip. Again didn't know at the time, caught pony, limped back to yard, took painkillers. Six months later the consultant was gently explaining to me why it still hurt and how it had been left far too long for anything to be done now (did have an xray at the time but hospital didn't spot the fracture

)

I've only fallen off twice in the whole of my life; neither were nasty however both times were quite spectacular.

Ist one was when I was around 8 years old and I had a little 3 year old Arab that I was backing. Riding bareback at canter around schooling arena, I decided to take Arab up the middle of the school, she decided that we were to go around, I changed my mind at the same time as she did, so I went her way and she went my way. I fell off and she landed on top of me. Had a very bruised stomach but was fine.

Second time was just over 30 years later in 2006. Took one of my 3 year olds to work a herd of cattle for the first time in his life. A steer stood him up, he lost his nerve and lept over the moon! We went up and down a few times when I decided it was time to bale out. As I jumped off, he went back up again and took my leg with him and flew me threw the air. Lots of arena footings in my ears and hair but no injury or ill effects.

On Monday whilst trying to get Monty to walk down a hill rather than run he reared up and fell backwards on top of me
blush.gif

I have a very badly bruised leg, soft tissue damage and some nerve damage around the knee but it could of been much worse
frown.gif

Monty is OK just a little shell shocked but he is being thoroughly checked out next week to make sure he is OK and then being schooled and hopefully taught how to walk down hill.

Horse tripped & I was pole driven onto the floor, ended up with a compressed spine. Took about 3 months to get rightish again. Best bit about it was my instructor threw me back on the horse again...best thing she ever did

I've had a couple of serious falls/accidents.
The first was out hacking on my pony when I was about 16yrs old. We were galloping round and field and I started to turn a circle to slow her down and she slipped over and kicked me in the head as she got up. I was in hospital for a few days with concussion and I still (many years later) have no recollection of the day other than what I've been told by friends.
My worst accident (not really a fall) was in 2001 when I was hit by a car out hacking. Again I blacked out the moment of the accident. I can only remember hearing a loud bang and wondering what the hell it was and then being trapped under my horse facing the opposite way down the road to which we were travelling. The driver said the sun was in her eyes and therefore didn't see us when she ploughed into us and we sailed over the roof of her car. My beautiful and wonderful mare had to be destroyed from her injuries but I was relatively unhurt - at least not physically anyway.
I've had a few other mishaps but those 2 are the worst and the second one I count as one of the worst experiences of my life.
