The BHS is asking riders to lobby their MPs for last-minute amendments to the new Highway Code, which could be in force by the end of this summer.
The BHS suggested amendments to the new Highway Code to the Secretary of State back in February 2006. But according to BHS director of access, safety and welfare Mark Weston, some have apparently been ignored.
Unless MPs bow to public pressure and pass further amendments, the Code will forbid riding two horses abreast on narrow and busy roads and when riding around bends. It will also exclude horses from all cycle tracks.
Mark Weston told H&H: "There can be many valid reasons for riding two abreast: groups of riders, nervous horses, novice riders, and defensive riding on winding country lanes where there is insufficient room for a car to pass a single horse safely."
Breaches of the Highway Code could potentially be used in evidence in any court proceedings under the Traffic Acts in order to establish liability in an accident.

This country is getting to the point of becomming ridiculous..... What about parents leading horses/ponies with children on them? What about the horse that is traffic training and needs shielding from traffic? it is safer to ride two abreast as oncomming traffic has to slow down (well hopefully does although I appreciate this isn't always the case) as there is less room to pass....

I for one, shall continue to ride two abreast regardless! I think everyone should now write to their MP and point out to them the implications of this..... Soon enough they'll be banning horses on the roads altogether if they get their way with this!

I think someone else posted re: this issue very recently with a petition to sign.
I agree with your sentiments though

I couldn't agree more. When I'm out with my young daugher hacking on our narrow lanes I quite often pull out so my daughter is on the inside when I hear a car coming, or there's a blind bend. It never fails to amaze me how many drivers will try to force themselves past you on a single track lane, when they wouldn't dream of trying to overtake a bike in the same place and sometimes two abreast makes it safer. Sorry but it infuriates me and like any parent my daughters safety comes first and sod any new law!! Especially the speed some people use the lanes at and then frown at you when you scowl at them for forcing you and your horse up the hedge.

This country is fast becoming the most ridiculous on this planet!

Safety denotes riding two abreast sometimes, the horse has to be catered for on the roads, we are loosing so many bridle paths and many of us HAVE to use a road (and believe me I wish we didn't).

Sometimes I wonder if the "rule makers" have two brain cells to rub together! If anything they should be doing more to make vehicle drivers more aware of safety issues in approaching, and passing both horses and horse transporters.

Let's have a few more laws passed in favour of the horses!

Didn't realise that someone had already posted - did look!!! Where is this petition, I for one shall be signing it!

Maybe we ought to have a mass meet in London - would we have to pay the congestion charge? 100's of horses bloking london sounds like a good idea, let the drivers try and squeeze past us there! And I am sure Mr Blair and Mr Brown wouldn't mind a load of manure outside of their houses, surely there is enough inside already!

Am I right in thinking the Highway code is changing or are they making it an actual offence to ride 2 abreast?

If it's the latter how would they enforce it?

Does the Household Cavalry ride everywhere in single file?

Until they make it an offence under the Road Traffic or Highways Act just keep doing the safest thing
and tell them cobblers!

If riding 2 abreast becomes an offence, then thats my hacking days over!!

Bud has to be shielded from traffic, anything larger than a car goes past and he will spin into oncoming traffic, at least with a more traffic proof horse on his outer, he has more confidence.

God help us, this country is going to the dogs!!

To be honest can you see the police enforcing this..? They have enough to do without scouring the countryside of all the lanes on the off chance they see people riding two abreast.

If they enforce this does that mean cyclists will be forced to do the same?

hmmm thats hunts on the road going down the pan then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its the car driving laws that need sorting out not ours!! I cannot believe that in this day and age people still do not slow down or even acknoweldge you on a road- i was out hacking the other day and went home early because there was just too many near misses with especially young drivers shooting past at 60mph+
