I'm sure this subject has probably been done to death, but I've had to consign my 'old-fashioned riding mac' to the dustbin after it finally expired. Trouble is, I'm having enormous difficulty in trying to find somewhere that still makes them. Mine came from Dark Horse originally, but they no longer make them.

Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can get one. I was in mourning for days after its burial.

N.B. You have to be of a certain age to know what one of these macs looked like. :D

The ones with the flaps that cover your legs, that you can put your leg through a strap in them so they don't flap about?

I think Rydale has some- the Rydale stand at Burghley definitely did as my sister nearly bought one. She opted for waterproof trousers and a jacket instead though. But they were really good and pretty cheap.

Goog grief, you surely don't mean the old cream coloured rubberised type do you? I haven't seen on of those for *ahem* rather a long time!

We all had them as children, and they were brilliant but rather unyielding. I can't think they are still made. I have gone back too far into history haven't I? (Insert extremely embarrassed smiley)

OMG - I had totally forgotten about these

MrsJingle, I thought the OP was talking about those too . They were unyeilding, and let drips run down your neck, but at least they didn't have those awful, never-work, double ended zips AND they never blew up in a gale (mainly because they weighed so much :D)

You're not alone, that's what I was thinking of too! They more or less stood up on their own once you'd taken them off. What with those and the jodhpurs with the baggy bit on the thighs, we must have looked fabulous :D

When i was a lot younger ( o dear this makes me feel soooo old!!) i used to have a Saturday job in the sadder dept of moss bros. we sold "military riding macs" then which were those rubberised cream ones. they were very much in demand.

I have two, and they are fantastic! One I bought from Shires and the other a friend got from ebay. When I moved my horses in September I had to hack them over to their new yard in torrential rain (hasn't stopped since! :D ) and my good old mac kept both me and my saddle dry. Mine are actually very comfortable, if voluminous! Even for yard work :)
PS I'm 53 and I didn't wear baggy jods! Even had two way stretch in the seventies! :D

You do need to check both the Rydale and the Jack Murphy ones, as the straps may not be in the best place to keep them down to cover your legs in a breeze. i'm seriously considering modifying mine!

Back in the sixties my friend & I had one each! We used to give each other 'seaters' on our bikes to go and do our ponies. Disaster struck one day when my friend was the seater and I was the pedalled - she managed to strap herself to the bike & when I steered round the corner, she fell off, taking the bike and me with her! We were struggling to get off the bike and out of the wet ditch. Took ages as we were helpless with laughter! However, the good old macs stood us in good stead as they kept the water out! Been afraid of leg straps ever since!

I'm sure these good old sorts are still made (for a sum though) - try google searching!

PS I did have the baggy Bedford cord ones from Milletts, but then moved on to the two way stretch ones from Jacatex!

I fully recommend the Musto Suffolk. Mine is the older style with cape but it is very waterproof and provides excellent cover. Leg straps and pommel cover too. ;)

In my youth I got pulled off my pony by a branch that managed to get stuck in the leg strap of one of those macs. I ended up on the floor with my leg in the air in a bush.:D

I have no idea why but this description had me imagining Inspector Gadget hung upside down from a branch looking none-too-pleased :D:D

I bought the musto for hunting and it wasn't very waterproof and you felt cold in it when it was wet so ive bought the Ri-dry coat and over breeches trousers from The Hunting Stockmarket which is the best coat ive ever ridden and hunted in ,in the worst weather have a look I don't think they are going to make anymore navy ones anymore so only have a few left. They are worth every penny.

Jacatex! There's a name I haven't heard in a long time :D Somewhere I have got a picture of my mum in the big baggy jods, taken in the early fifties.
I remember my first navy jacket, when I was ten. It was made of pure wool, smelled like a wet dog when it rained and my mum used to steam it before a show. I still have my mum's old Pony Club badge and tie, somewhere.
