Maybe not the best title but anyway...

My farrier suggested to a friend that she stands her horse in a bucket of diluted bleach to strenghten his hooves 'Don't bother with all those expensive supplements!'

Which old, tried and tested ways do you swear by?

Strapping - I haven't met anyone else who does it in years.

My mum still comes and straps my horses occasionally. When I lived at home and she used to look after them when I was away she'd do them every day. I'd get back to the most amazingly shiny horses you've ever seen. I don't have the time for it sadly :(

Mine is strapped at least 4 times per week, he looks great and it's a workout for me!

Knew I wasn't alone! I love doing it, and have never had a horse who didn't enjoy it.

Exercising horses through slight injuries- I see more and more people bOx resting at the first sign of a swelling!!

Feed wise - simple straights and a bit chaff, at the minimum the horse needs. I don't like fat horses.

And good old fashioned hill work, and stamina work in fields. Works the best for both horse and rider.

And I love bandages compared to boots!!

I like bandages compared to boots too!! And I like a nice thick straw/shavings bed apposed to rubber matting with a token gesture of straw or shavings on top.

We used to have a leather pad and bang their necks and rumps to build up muscle. I must admit I dont do it now. Still do road work and hill work though. Always school out hacking, outdoor schools were not the norm then and I dont have one now. On the bad side Line and Pin firing were also acceptable for bowed tendons. I also remember giving horses a physic when they came in from grass, to empty their guts, god knows why, unheard of in this day and age. It wasnt ALL good in the old days!!!

what is a physic?

Lots of steady roadwork to get horses fit. Seems to be on the decline.

Not with me, it isn't :)
Best way for building up muscles, good level surface too much of the time.

Always did this for the competition animals & do this to big fuzzy too. Great for my muscles too :)

Wisping? How many of the younger users on here know how to make one?

yeah I like a decent bed down for my neds (even on rubber matting), we were talking at work the other day about when we've been onto yards where horses are BEDDED down on a scattering of sawdust on a concrete floor.

I still feed straits.

LOVE my bandages. I have about 20 pairs (its more of a fetish then a necessity!).
I will always travel either in bandages or with nothing dependant on if I want to keep the horse clean. (I am 20 btw)

Ride your horses - yep, up on their backs and off you go for a proper hack, including roadwork, don't let me see you back here in under an hour, YES EVEN WHEN IT IS RAINING!

Strapping in our house means a proper groom. As in take your body brush, press hard, do three strokes on the horses coat, drag metal curry comb over brush, repeat. Keep going for anything between forty minutes and an hour! You arms will be like jelly, you will sweat, you will be red in the face but your horse will love it and will look great. Don't just tickle him with the brush though or they'll be hell to pay (in our house at least) you really have to lean into it!!

You could finish by wisping if you wanted.
