If your dogs are on metacam it's worth checking about the JD with your vet. Metacam, the one beginning with R and the injections didnt work on my boy but this feed did.
Those two old darlings have certainly fallen on their feet! Well done you.
A few years ago, I took on two JRT crosses, 11 and 10. I heard they were old and expected them to be doddery. They towed me back from the kennels along the beach at a rate of knots! I had them for 4 years and 3 years respectively - great characters.
Thought I'd check in with another update and some photos. It would be great if I can update regulary and use as a diary to look back at the changes in them
We've had a couple of nights since I last updated and they are happy now to be tucked into bed (they have so many to choose from I'm starting to get jealous! Lol) and lights out with no crying or upset. Our boy, Oz, is still found to be nestled in his crate with the door open come morning, it is nearest the door and overlooking the room so he must be 'protecting' them...
Charlie does have a thing about slippers, shoes and socks as said previously and gets quite upset if they are taken off of her. I bought her a 'comforter' in the shape of a soft puppy toy which she does sleep at night with. Have considered that the snappyness could be caused somewhat by her slight cataracts she doesn't do this ANY other time though! Have taken to telling her a firm 'No' and put it a seperate room for a few minutes for a timeout. I don't expect to change her in any way but am hoping she will at least click onto the fact this behaviour isn't on. It was what my vet told me to do with our elderly shih tzu when he got older and fiestier! So hoping I am doing the right thing?
They are both putting weight on quickly and have reduced meals a little as now do not want to put too much effort on joints too quickly. That said, I'm really looking forward to their weigh in at the vets next Tuesday to see how much they have put on!
We spent an afternoon in the garden yesterday, was lovely and sunny everyone loved it. They mooched around and sat in the sun for ages. Here's a few photos of the day and one of them all cozied up together at the end of the day
What a happy update . I was hoping to hear everything was going well. Love the pics. particularly the last one, your younger dog sounds a star - as are you of course !! Look forward to more updates.
Bless, they look like they've been with you forever! My friend put her old spaniel onto Ageility which really helped her stiffness, its got the same joint benefitting ingredients as Yumove but extra stuff for old dogs too x
Thnkyou all for the lovely messages am quite thrilled they have a wee following on H&H!!
Today we ventured to the vets to get Charlies stitches out, second jabs done and a check in on weight and teeth. Billy is an absolute nervous wreck in the car. If you so much as sit on the floor at home and touch his collar (as in fiddle with the buckle for example) he will start to stress so you can have some idea of what unfolded in the car.. we had everything from wimpers to high pitch screaming, even howling! I travelled them both along with Oz as he is perfect in the car so thought he would be a calming influence if anything. He did rub of on Charlie at least who snuggled in next to him on the seat I can't imagine what has made Billy this way as his behaviour is so extreme, trying to hide and curling up as tight as he can next to the car door :'(
Thankfully, it was only a very short trip in the car to the vets and even though his crying was throughout our visit, he calmed down enough on the way home after putting the radio on classic fm!
The vet was fantastic and we had lots of lovely comments from all the staff about their condition and new home she explained exactly what they had done with their teeth.. she said that Billy was the worst and biggest dental she has done to date. We talked through the healing process as with his molars removed, they had left gaps to the jaw bone hence why he had to be hand fed a few times. This has now healed over nicely but will still be feeling a little tender and uncomfortable when eating for a while. Charlie has most of her bottom molars and three canines left which are in really good condition. They both sailed through jabs - Oz wandering around, chilled as always and avoiding the scales... lol. The vet then removed Charlies stitches, which she stood rock solid to have done - super little girl that she is!
Moving onto their weigh ins...! Billy had put on a whole 3kgs! And Charlie 2kgs! Was absolutely thrilled to bits as was the vet )) I decided to pop Oz on the scales too which he protested against by going stiff as a board! The vet laughed and said he was a good weight but shouldn't put anymore on so was a good visit for everyone! (Except poor Oz!)
We came home and as it was such a lovely, sunny day, we all went for a potter around the park. Billy was quite settled by this point and enjoyed towing me along with Ozzies' help, towards all the best places that they just had to investigate! This left Charlie and I following on and I caught myself smiling looking at all three of them.. I do feel so proud that we have given them a home. Even more so as I myself have a disability and am thankful that they all give me such companionship and purpose to get up every morning. I live with constant pain every day and just spending time with them in the garden, taking some photos or just enjoying the sunshine, gives me at least some distraction even if just for a moment. Dogs are just amazing in every way aren't they?
Oh great to have such a positive update, although it sounds very harrowing at times ! I'm so glad they're settling in so well and also that it's benefiting you as well, happy times . Its really good news about their weight, amazing what love and care does in such a short time. Love the pics. Keep them coming !
Wonderful update, you must feel really thrilled with their progress. Yumove is excellent, so hopefully you will see an improvement soon. Would a few drops of Rescue Remedy perhaps help next time you have to take them in the car?
Thank you sooooooo much for caring.xxxxx
So it is now day 12! The days have just flew past but both dogs seem to be well and truly
settled. Since being on the YuMove supplement I am being towed around the park! Billy had some time off the lead and never left my side he trotted along with a definate spring in his step and also had a little run!! My partner said the difference in him was so noticeable now. Charlie the same, she can whizz across the living room and ping up onto the sofa with just a little panting a a result. She is in spring chicken mode I think!
My friend, who is a dog groomer, popped in yesterday to give all three a bath, clip and pamper session. Charlie went first and seemed a little unsure to begin with but soon had her tail wagging she is such a little madam! Gone is her flakey coat and she has a beautiful sheen.
Billy then went up, he was such a worried little soul! He did have a right old wimper because we had to remove his collar and have a lead put on (the ones used for safety on the grooming tables). We did consider doing things differently for him bit decided to proceed as my friend is very experienced and I trust her implicitly with my dogs. She talked to him, she sang, she even joined in getting wet during his bath, bless her! Once he was done he whizzed around having a roll and a wiggle, rubbing himself up our legs and generally having a good old itch! His coat has also come up lovely, gone is all of the flea dirt and grease.
Oz dog loved his preen as always... such a 'metrosexual' that one... I would liken him to Professor Hope in Holby City with a touch of Carl Hester I think... haha!
Oh bless them. They are lucky to have found you OP
I wonder if Billy might take to a harness, if he finds collar fiddling stressful? If he's never had one before, it might be a way to break any bad associations he has with his collar (wondering if someone has yanked him about by the collar or something? Maybe someone did a bit of old-style Barbara Woodhouse training and hurt his neck - or it might just be that he finds neck-touching intimidating, some dogs just do.). You could just try introducing it at dinner time to begin with, so it gains a nice positive association in his head... Just a thought, anyway.
